The tires that came with my Trek bike are 700 x 35. Would these 700 x 38 tires work as a replacement?
Yes they should

not that difficult, but does take a little work. Deflate tire, remove wheel from frame, lever out tire edge... little by little all around, remove tire (&tube), do everything again in reverse. Levering the tire in and out can be a little troublesome if you're not use to it. Can be done with screwdriver or other hard tool with flat edge. Worst case is you can pinch the tube and make a hole and end up needing a new tube too. (well really worst you slip and end up gouging something with the screwdriver, like your leg... but let's skip that.) I'd suggest you grab a specialty bicycle levering tool if you're going to do it more than once or twice. I've had mine for a couple decades and it's pretty useful on the occasions you need them. Lots to choose from, most come in packs of two or three so you can keep the tire from popping back in while you move on to another section. I usually only need two, but have a set of three, like this:

Thanks.
I believe I have this tool somewhere that came with the bike.
Will check tomorrow if not then order it from Amazon.

my current bike tire is 700x45c. it's a bit too wide i think. I guess 700x38c is a good replacement?
According to claude.ai: A 622mm (700c) rim can accommodate tires with widths ranging from 35mm to 45mm. So 700c x 38mm should be a good replacement for you.

According to the Camels, these tires generally sell for $15 to $25 at Amazon in the last 5 years.

They're $23 at Target right now. https://www.target.com/p/schwinn-...A-80178043 [target.com]
Hmm I wonder why it dropped so much. $5.6 is definitely a steal comparing with $23.

For those asking about size...

These will likely fit most 700c "commuter" or "hybrid" or "gravel" bikes, but there are things to check.

Your wheel size needs to be 700c, 28" or a (narrow) "29er". They won't fit a 650c or 26" wheeled bike.

Your specific rims play a part. So if you have particularly narrow rims (like on a road racing bike) that typically use 23-28c then these likely won't fit.

Your frame can also limit the size. A larger tire size may rub on the frame. For example, the rims on my bike can accommodate up to 28c, but my frame limits me to 25c.

And similarly, if you have mudguards, that can further limit tire choice.

Need wider tires for a 3 day tour along the C&O canal. Do you think these would do? 38 is perhaps the widest my bike can take.

If you're unsure of bike tire compatibility, give this a read and you will know everything you need to know. It's very clearly written with helpful pictures.

Have an old unused Schwinn that I decided to replace in 2020 because tires were dry rotted and it cost $50+ for a new pair, plus inner tubes, and who knows what else. At this cost, I'm finally going to start fixing it.

Thanks OP!
