It says in the game description: This edition also includes a 30-day free play period*
But then there's no * anywhere to explain what this means. Do you have to pay to play this past 30 days?
Yes, this is a subscription based game. You need to pay a monthly subscription to be able to play beyond the free period. This is how the game has always been and unfortunately will likely remain until whenever they finally decide to shut down the servers.
Does anyone know how this works with the generous free trial? I know if you sub even for a month you can't use the free trial anymore. I did get this but I hope it didn't disqualify me from the free trial.
Honestly, with Microsoft acquiring Blizzard I'm surprised they worked with one of the competitors instead of promoting their own MMO.
I installed it and logged into my square account and it said it was already activated and wouldn't let me play so I just made a new square account with a different email and it let me in

Even worse, it seems that, for the Xbox version specifically, you have to buy some kind of special digital currency via the Xbox store in order to pay for the monthly sub fees. You can't just go to the Mogstation or something and do it that way.
If you have a PC to play on, that definitely seems to be the way to go. Especially since there's a free trial that includes basically all the same content. There are some restrictions on that version, but you probably won't really bump up against most of them until at least the tail end of ARR. IMO, the only really obnoxious one is no retainers, so you only have your player inventory and chocobo saddlebag which is just not even remotely enough unless you eschew all the crafting jobs. Either way, by the time you really start running into some of the limitations you should have had more than enough time to decide if you want to pay to keep playing and remove the restrictions. And if you're a die-hard cheapskate, you can play a good chunk of the game, completely for free.

Once your account is flagged as a license purchase or subscription you cannot gain free trial access again
