Do you want wide angle or not?
If you don't, then get some prime.

There is a huge difference between 10-20mm and 30mm.

Huge.

Just know what you want before you buy.
Lens is not for virtual reality content.

VR = image stabilization just like other brands.
Out of 4 specific lenses you mentioned only one is actually wider, and it's a fisheye as I recall. The Tokina is fantastic but it's 30% more expensive and lacks VR. For folks who aren't great at photography this is honestly probably a better choice. This is a great wide lens with a consumer aperture boosted significantly by the fact that it has VR. This is a fantastic deal if you have a DX mirror cam, this is probably getting discontinued due to Nikons switch to all mirrorless. So many useless posts in this thread it's unreal.

I got excited that this was a lens specifically for recording VR content...VR for Nikon is "vibration reduction".
Is this not the same as image stabilization for every other company?
Is it more special somehow or just misleading?

Just stabilization like every other company's. All company's try to brand it in their own way. Nikon calls it VR, others use terms like IS, VC or Steady-shot.

at this range would it be better to just get a prime lens maybe something around 30mm?

If I had to choose one lens for the Nikon DX cams it would be the Nikon 35mm 1.8 dx. It's less than $200 new...Its not a wide angle lens. It's a good walk around lens for every day normal pics.

This Nikon 10-20mm is a wide angle lens and will take wider photos. It's better for landscape photos or areas where you can't back up as much.

Hope this helps..

There's much wider lenses available...The Tokina 11-16 2.8 or 16-20mm (Great lense, much heavier)The various Samyang /Rokinon 8mm, 14mm, etc..... theyre fun too, but expect exaggerated and ultra wide pics.

Hope this helps..

Dx mirror cam? I don't think these work with out adapter on their mirror cams
you're confusing mirror and mirrorLESS, the new cameras are mirrorless and this won't work on them without adapter, which means it's probably soon to be discontinued since consumer grade DX lenses are more than likely the first to go (many pro's/hobbyists still use FX cameras with mirror and will probably for some time to come)

That $199 would be better spent going towards a lens that's at least f/4.
It's a super wide angle, you know, for landscapes where you use f/13 and stuff?

This lens is an AF-P lens which is a new focus motor that requires newer Nikon bodies for full compatibility. Check AFP compatibility before buying.

For a 10-20 ultra wide?

Lol.. That 1/3 of a stop wouldn't even be noticeable shooting wide landscapes.
