I run mine in VA all the time, Uniden R series detectors have fantastic shielding so they are very difficult to be detected. As a resident, I wouldn't use it around town (personally don't speed really in town anyway) as it's a but riskier with getting caught, but I've driven past literally hundreds of Virginia State Police cars running radar and never had an issue.

Legal in 49 states. Just because you think something is illegal doesn't mean it is. The law is written in books not your mind.

I have the r3. Got it after a $1200 ticket, long story. Haven't got a ticket in the last 5 years or so now. Just gotta use common sense and be vigilant. This doesn't make you immune to speed traps as thing such as trees can obstruct radar signals but it's a good way to alert you to check your speed if a cop is nearby.

Get out of the left lane and turn off your turn signal. The left lane is just for passing.

Mississippi Code Title 63. Motor Vehicles & Traffic Regulations § 63-3-519

Current as of January 01, 2023

It shall be unlawful for any person or peace officer or law enforcement agency, except the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol, to purchase or use or allow to be used any type of radar "speed detection" equipment upon any public street, road or highway of this state. (You can't have speed detection equipment as a private citizen like a radar gun, but it doesn't say you can't use a radar detector)
So local police and county sheriff's deputies can't have radar speed detection in Mississippi? Interesting

These are just to avoid speed traps?
When the new Texas law eventually gets enforced, certain unlicensed drivers will be avoiding police encounters like the plague

I'ma be downvoted probably but real slickdeal is to just drive at a speed you won't get pulled over at. You'll save money from better gas economy and be less stressed. Most you save by driving fast is a few minutes anyway, unless you're doing like a Canonball run where you need to maintain 150+ mph.
Why are you commenting in this thread? You sound boring.

How does this compare to the alternatives? Appears to be good value for money but what would you buy if you wanted something a little nicer?
Uniden R8 at $700. Slightly better front detection, far better rear detection and arrows to show the direction of the threat. For the price the R4 is pretty amazing though.

Not true. On occasions when I am not in a hurry and go speed limit, nearly every one else goes much faster than me. Ironically going speed limit when everyone else is going 10 mph over could be dangerous.

How does it compare to escorts redline?
Check out Vortex Radar. The Redline is great but more than double the price. Uniden R8 is a better choice at the higher end

Excellent feedback. People need to be aware that it's not a "police detector" but is a good warning system for speed traps.

I have R3s, an R7, and an R8. These save me on a weekly basis, I am a road warrior- perhaps 30k miles driven annually. Just FYI, the detection ranges and filtering is just about as good as anything out there, but if you can afford to pony up another $200, you should get an R7/8 with the arrows, or the V2. Once you have directional arrows and know where the Po-po are, there's really no going back. The big advantage is at night, where you can't really see where they are, esp. from behind. No, it won't save you much from laser gun, but in my areas- south of Albany, NY, there are very, very few patrol cars with laser- i'd estimate maybe 5% within 250 mile radius if I'd have to put a number on it. Also laser has some disadvantages, I could be wrong, but idt the patrol car can be moving and no rain/fog. But, without a doubt, having something is WAY better than nothing, used in conjunction with Waze- and now Google maps to a less degree, it yields a great amount of protection from speeding tickets.

…and YES, using your noodle, by constantly scanning the cars in front of you for their brake lights, and breaks between dividers/medians in roadways, are incredibly helpful. You must calibrate to your environment.

If anyone here has travelled along the bottom-half of I95 in Florida, holy crap, if your not doing 90+mph, your holding up traffic, absolutely insane down there, I guess that's why I so rarely if ever, see a patrol car.

This thing is excellent if you live in a city with tons of speed and red light cameras. Like NYC.

German autobahn, with mostly no speed limits, has significantly less death/injury rate than USA. The root causes of danger on the roads is human incompetence and lack of awareness/focus, not rate of speed.

Self-driving cars will solve these problems, albeit with some rate of failure, but a fraction of what us chimps are capable of.

Wow TIL. I live in the ONE state where it's not legal and automatically assumed it was the case everywhere, especially since these are, as far as I know, only used to detect speed traps.
Nope, I argue that the even bigger reason to have one is to map out all the automatic door openers in your neighborhood. It's a hobby but it's MY hobby. Besides, what's wrong with knowing where the speed traps are ? By slowing down the radar detector HELPED the ultimate goal of speed traps, to slow people down. Just wave at the po po when you drive past their speed trap. Win, win right ?
