Could I still get 2.5g level speeds across a cat5e cable? I have those types of cables run down to my basement, wondering if I ever make an all SSD NAS, if this would be good, or if I should just look into an enterprise 10G one and slap that in the rack

rofl... "gaming switch"
because any type of gaming in a household setting needs multi-gig.

80$ is really steep for a dumb switch.

if you're lucky, Cat5e might get you all the way to 10gbit.

CAT5e actually bumped to 2.5G (that was kinda the point), CAT5 was 1G although most good CAT5 will do 2.5G fine.

It depends on the length of the link too. Over shorter distances lower categories like cat5e may be able to do 2.5 or 10 G.

Cat5e supports 2.5g. But like other similar cables, it depends on the length. It's possible you'll find some of your runs work for 2.5g, and some longer ones don't.

If you get a 10g switch, you may want to make sure that it supports 2.5g Ethernet. I'm not sure about the switch world, but I know that a lot of older datacenter 10g NICs only support 1/10g. They don't support 2.5g or 5g. Since a whole lot of consumer gear comes with 2.5g NICs nowadays, it would be a shame if you had 2.5g and 10g gear communicating over a 1g link.

This looks like a decent price for the hardware from a somewhat reputable manufacturer. But if you are ok with a brand less well known, then I think it's around double the available price.

You are 100% correct on the gaming part. 100 mbps should be plenty for gaming. 1 gbps gives you ample buffer in case your system does other network traffic in the background. We both know that it's really just marketing.

the spec is 100m for CAT5e at 2.5G... most residential pulls won't be anywhere near that.
