I used to be an AllTrails user but I'm getting tired of having to pay every year for the plus version. I've switched to komoot, brought their world pack and that's it, no yearly fee. komoot sells a premium version but the basic one has everything I need. So far I'm very happy with it.

Alltrails is really two apps: a trail & activity discovery app and a navigation app while you are hiking.

The discovery portion is very good, with good curation and ratings. Great comments updating you on trail conditions. Thankfully this portion is free for everyone.

With PRO you are paying for the offline features that enable trail navigation. Those features are pretty terrible, especially compared to Gaia. They are unreliable, and difficult to manage with their clumsy UX. For example, if you are hiking multiple trails around a given region, you need to download each one separately. With Gaia you just draw a big box that can be as big as Texas if you like.
What's worse is that downloads often get "lost" while you are off signal so you have no map.

In short, use Alltrails free version to discover routes and then Gaia for actually hiking and navigating when offline.

Downloaded Komoot, and am willing to pay the 20 bucks for lifetime world offline maps, but their trail selection is crap compared to AllTrails. I reviewed areas that I know well and it shows no hikes in that area. AllTrails has several in that exact spot, and I've personally hiked them. Tried it around my house, plus two separate other locations that are super well known by local hikers.

This seems to be similar to the Tile/AirTag battle. In community driven apps, the largest community wins regardless of how cheap/cool the competitor is. If 80% of the hikers who use apps are using AllTrails, then it's compilation is the most complete and therefore the most desirable. Sorry Tile (Komoot).

You can find most of the trails and maps on here for free elsewhere. Heck the trail heads usually have maps you can take a pic of or even now a QR code to download their map. I forget what all the premium stuff is but the only reason I buy it is because it lets you download them for offline use. If you're in a spot with great cell service you don't even need to though.

The free version is great. Went to some park, and managed to not get lost, eaten by wolves, fall of a cliff face, etc.

Unfortunately, komoot doesn't have even a 10 percent of hikes available on All trails, at least for Colorado area.

Organic maps though are pretty great, but based on open source project and have a ton of info for free

Whenever they decide it does, I recall alltrails sold some lifetime memberships and then backtracked on them to say they were 3 year memberships.

If you live in Colorado, there is a free app for their trails: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1435737776

Used their app on Android while i lived there. Wish every state put that kinda of effort towards recreation. Highly recommend and it's free. I mostly use for off road driving and biking. OnX seems to be a pretty good app as well. Never was a big fan of alltrails

I live near the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and saw that many of the park's trails are already on the app. If some are missing, I'll map them out.
