Heads up that alot of the books on sale were published posthumously and heavily edited by his son, Christopher. You can see a full list on Wikipedia:

Thanks, this is helpful information for those who were not previously aware. Accepting that these are not fully written by JRR himself, does anyone recommend any of them? I know they probably won't be as enjoyable as Hobbit and LoTR, but if there are any that capture some of the magic, I might be interested in trying them out after avoiding them for the last 20 years.

J.R.R. appointed Christopher as iterary executor and granted "full power to publish, edit, alter, rewrite, or complete any work of [his father's] which may be unpublished at [his] death or to destroy the whole or any part or parts of any such unpublished works".

I have never before seen anyone try to make the strange characterization that Christopher was ever going against his father's wishes by doing what he was appointed to do.

The question I would consider is if Tolkien wanted them published, why didn't he try during his lifetime? LOTR came out in 1954-55--he had 20 years between that and his death that he could've tried to publish his remaining catalog of existing works. I'll grant that maybe he didn't think they would be accepted (I don't think The Silmarillion was successfully published until after his death), but I'd also invite that maybe he didn't think they were good enough, or he wasn't happy with them.

I would basically treat these writings like a band's odds-and-ends album--expect more along the lines of demos and outtakes rather than fully realized works.

Many of these can be read free on the library website Internet Archive. Granted they aren't in as nice of a format as Kindle, but free is free.

J.R.R. was a perfectionist and liked to continually tinker around. He didn't typically "finish" things until pushed to do so (CS Lewis pushed him with LotR). The short story 'Leaf by Niggle' is actually Tolkien's own semi-autobiographical answer to this question.

Christopher helped his father with his works throughout his whole life. If there was anyone qualified to publish J.R.R.'s works and best guess his intentions, it was Christopher.

Seems there are so many iterations of these works. Why do authors always try to do so many iterations after the fact?

It's really confusing to know which one to buy and just want an easy to pick up defacto version.

Anyone have any suggestions or where to start for someone that has only seen the movies to start reading the books?

From what I know, no one has ever complained about anything Christopher ever finished that JRR Tolkien started.
