For anyone else considering doing this, keep in mind that it's extremely overkill for even the fastest USB spec out right now.

USB 3.2 Gen 2 tops out at 10Gbps, which is about 1200MB/s, while this drive does most of its sustained reads at around 4000MB/s (32Gbps).

If you jump up to USB 4.0 (20Gbps), you can double it to around 2400MB/s. But that's still nearly half of what this drive can do and it requires a USB 4.0 enclosure that currently costs more than the drive itself.

You can pick a much cheaper drive and it will still perform relative to this one over USB.
I wish there were much cheaper drives, with similar reliability and reputation. One bonus of the speed capabilities is not lost at least, in that combined with relatively slow USB enclosure, may result in very reliable (low temperature) operation. That's what I would tell myself if I needed one. Smilie

I believe 2tb m.2 drives were lass than $100 last year as well as SSD's, and a lot were saying the prices will just keep dropping, but it looks like the prices are increasing.

Virtually every reputable source was reporting that NAND prices would be going up again. The drop actually went on for longer than initially expected. Anyone claiming that prices would just keep dropping was either uninformed, disingenuous, or sticking their head in the sand. This isn't like the 2011 Thailand flood that caused hard drive prices to spike, this was fully expected by anyone paying attention.

Wasn't the 2tb like 80? I forgot how much I paid but it seems close to this price.

Are prices expected to continue to increase? I guess the question is, if the drive is not needed immediately, should I wait for better deals?

Prices have continuously been going down over the last 7 months or so. Not sure what drives you've been looking at. This maybe the bottom for a while though.

I put one of these in an enclosure and it made the best, fastest external hdd / thumb drive I've every had.
Do you leave the drive connected all the time? Seems there would be heat issues?

I mean, prices aren't where they have been historically, but it was more of a case of "don't go out of your way to seek out a drive with this level of performance if you're just going to throw it in an enclosure".

I also wouldn't recommend a drive where an included heatsink is a default option with the expectation that it will run cool.

Then again, some of these enclosures have heatsinks and fans.
