Hi,

I needed to add a water purifier to my gears and thought it was a good price for this MSR kit, as it barely goes on sale and is usually described as the easiest/safest product for backcountry/travel purposes.
Might be overkill for most if used in the U.S., but could prove useful while backpacking & traveling overseas . Good long term investment for whoever is on the lookout for it.

Serious question why this and not the mini works for half the price?

I guess if you are backpacking and supporting a large group with one filter? This thing is crazy.

Answer generated by AI. The differences might not be worth the price gap for most, but I personally like the advanced filter for virus while overseas and self-cleaning.

The MSR MiniWorks EX and the MSR Guardian are both water filters designed for outdoor use, but they have some key differences:

Filtration Technology:The MiniWorks EX uses a ceramic filter element to remove bacteria, protozoa, and particulate, but it doesn't remove viruses. The Guardian utilizes an advanced hollow fiber filter that removes bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, making it suitable for more diverse water sources.

Pump Mechanism:Both filters require manual pumping, but the mechanisms differ. The MiniWorks EX has a hand pump with a lever, while the Guardian has a pump handle that can be pumped with one hand.

Flow Rate:The Guardian typically has a higher flow rate compared to the MiniWorks EX, allowing for faster filtering of water.

Durability and Maintenance:The Guardian is known for its robust construction and self-cleaning mechanism, which helps prevent clogging and extends the filter's lifespan. The MiniWorks EX requires occasional cleaning and maintenance to prevent clogging and ensure optimal performance.

Weight and Size:The MiniWorks EX is lighter and more compact than the Guardian, making it a preferred choice for backpackers and travelers who prioritize weight and space savings. In summary, while both filters serve the purpose of providing safe drinking water in outdoor settings, the MSR Guardian offers superior filtration capabilities, durability, and ease of use, albeit at a slightly higher weight and size compared to the MiniWorks EX.
