I wish the 2500 was on sale too. The 3000 isn't much lighter than the 4000.

I have a couple of the 4000s and like them.

Wal-Mart was clearing out their Penn Pursuit reels (minus the reel cover) in store a few weeks back. Picked up a couple of 2500's for $17.50 each, and a few 4000's, 5000's, and 6000's for $22.50 to $28.50 each.

I had a pen pursuit 3. Was fishing sockeye in WA from the bank one day, yanked my rod up to get the weight off the rocks and the whole spool/cassette was wobbly.
Turns out the anti-reverse shaft snapped in half. I discovered this after it was out of warranty. Managed to get one use out of it.
Won't be buying another Penn, I'll stick with Shimano.

I've got a 4000 too and really like it, but I wouldn't be interested in a 2500 at all. These are heavy, almost overbuilt reels. I like that for a pier rod or catfishing, but in a 2500-3000 size, I want more finesse. I have Okumas, Daiwas, and Shimanos that I like way better in the smaller sizes.

It's a saltwater reel. It is overbuilt for freshwater. I would rather use a 2500 size Penn in saltwater than use a freshwater reel.

Is the 6000 good for surf fishing? And what would be a decent, cheap rod to pair it with? Wouldn't mind trying surf fishing and maybe going out a few times a year.

For the 6000 a 9 or 10ft rod. Penn battalion or a tsunami rod
