I had the same issue. I currently have a Family plan and was trying to extend it with this Personal code. With Microsoft customer service over the phone, I was finally able to get the code to work to add 9 months to my Family Plan.

To do this, open Microsoft Word and sign out of your account (top right corner). Once signed out, close word and then re-open it. A window should pop up saying "Sign in to Office." Do not sign in, but instead click "I Have a Product Key." Enter your product key on the next page. You will then be prompted to sign in. Sign in to your account you are trying to add time to. Once signed in, a page will come up confirming that the product key is for a Microsoft 365 Personal account. Click Confirm. It may ask you to verify your payment information. If so, click Confirm. The last page will ask you if you want to stay on your Family plan or if you want to switch to Personal. Click whatever option works for you (in my case, I'm on a Family plan, so I chose that option). Then click Confirm. It will add 12 months to your plan if you have Personal or 9 months to your plan if you have Family.

I hope this helps
Thanks so much for the detailed instruction, it works!!

It seems to me that Microsoft updated their web workflow and forgot this personal-> family conversion case, but the desktop software still retains them.

I guess the phone support is more competent than the chat support. I wasted more than an hour chatting yesterday for nothing.

I'd note that this seems to only work on Windows. I am not sure if there is another method for MacOS.

Yeah...I'm not sure about MacOS because I was using Windows. Try calling Microsoft support as they can probably help. They provided me the method I posted. Good luck.

It looks like Microsoft killed this process of using Word. I tried the Word method, then I chatted with MS support. They said:
I have checked in my system and as per the updated policies now when you redeem a product key on an active subscription you will be switched to the subscription you are redeeming.
You might have redeemed and got prorated time in the family subscription before but now if you redeem personal on family you will be switched to personal.

That just blows… I was about to do this (Mac) but don't wanna risk losing the family plan!

It may be worth trying this on your Microsoft account online. I was able to add the key by selecting Redeem a Cord or Prepaid Card on the Microsoft 365 Family subscription page under my Microsoft account. I was prompted whether to keep M365 Family or convert to personal, and it prorated correctly.

I previously had Family but it expired last month. I bought 5 years of Personal hoping to convert it to family using the "Word" workaround in this thread but I didn't get it done before the loophole was closed.

However, I was able to redeem all 5 years of Personal through 6/3/2029 in the Microsoft Portal. Then, inside that portal, it offered a Family upgrade for a one-time cost of $99. So I bought it and the full 5 years were upgraded to Family. I did not see any proration that reduced my time period.

So I ended up spending $150 for 5 years of Personal plus $99 for the Family upgrade. So for $249 total, I now have Family for 5 years at a cost of $4.15/month.

When it came to converting Personal to Family, I chose 9.99/month and that worked but the total months reduced from 60 to 52. Still not bad at $3.08/month. I wonder if I should have enabled/disabled auto payment to get the bonus months. I will find that out in late 2028.
