I don't understand how people still shop at these stores... they are terrible and overpriced! I'm certain that I can keep my games and still find a just as cheap option to buy, from almost anyone else. So, I would spend the same amount of money and still keep my old games. If they then sell your old games, you'll be ahead of Game Stop's best options... Hate these stores!
In general, you're not wrong. They've been messing with the discounts and what you can use your free monthly rewards on as well. You can no longer apply the $5 credit toward digital currency because they treat them like gift cards in the POS, and it can't be used to make a pre-order reservation unless you're paying in full.
You can make out pretty well if you're savvy, though—I pulled down over $500 in trade credit a couple years ago with a PS4Pro and a couple controllers when they were doing the extra 50% on accessories and extra $50 on consoles plus 10% pro bonus. Controllers were almost $50 each at that time and if I'd sold online I would have been lucky to get $400 after selling and shipping fees (plus potentially dealing with a scam buyer).
As a side note, the clerk at my local store said that the $10 off $100/$25 off $250 promotion can apply to pre-orders as long as you are doing an off-the-shelf transaction that day, even if you don't hit the $100 threshold. I bought $70 of games in store, put in a preorder for May, and he said that the $10 off should hit when I pick up the preorder since the original transaction is tied to the in store purchase. We will see if that holds true.

Interesting - I had employees at the 2 different stores I visited yesterday tell me the opposite. I specifically asked them this question because I wanted to grab a game plus pre-order Stellar Blade and fully pay it off, but they told me that would not count toward the 10 off 100 or 25 off 250 promo.

Yeah. I'm suspicious that it'll work out that way, but he seems to have done it himself before *shrug* Worst case, I miss out on $10 I wasn't planning to get anyway.

Lots of angry kiddos mad at gamestop. They'll be sad when there's no more "owning" games because physical isn't an option anymore.
Ya'll are the problem.
They sell 'new' stuff that's opened. Not always, and perhaps not every store, but I saw them sell a guy a PS5 slim with the seal cut and they told the guy it was cut in shipping.
Which is the most absurd thing ever really. Just a completely pointless lie/business practice.
They actually had this live in some stores last week, and the values were pretty good especially if you had the PS5 version of a game.
Note: You can use trade in credit towards gaming gift cards like PlayStation, Xbox, and etc. but only in person.
Is this a recent policy change? Or does it have to be done in the same transaction as the trade in? I went a few months ago and they wouldn't let me use my in store credit (that I got from trading a console in) to purchase digital cards.
Is the extra 50% already included in the values listed on the Trade In page[gamestop.com]? Or is it on top of those?
The extra 50% is on top of the value listed on the website. I added another $200 to my trade in credit today by trading in seven games that were within a few bucks of their ebay/Amazon going price (see pricecharting) after the bonus.
Hopefully GameStop will run a B2G1 soon to cycle inventory.
Search for the game you want to trade in (make sure it's the exact title/edition/system as shown) and find the "Store Credit" value under "Regular Value". Using Super Mario Bros. Wonder as an example, it's listed as $35 as of today (4/4/2024).
Take the Store Credit Regular Value ($35) and multiply it by 1.5 if you're *not* a Pro Member. If you're a Pro Member, take the Store Credit Regular Value and multiply it by 1.6. For example, a Pro Member trading in Super Mario Bros. Wonder for store credit will get $35 x 1.6 = $56.

What's funny is it's the same people just about every time making the same comments. They hate the company yet spend the time to let people know how much they dislike the company. The irony is not lost on me.

For people who want to know how to calculate the EXACT trade-in credit value you're going to get for a game, go here: https://www.gamestop.co
