I've got to say that this reeks of bullshit. They are selling licenses to list yourself as TOP TIER™, so the study is riddled with bias. I just read through the study, and while intake valves showed significantly less deposits, most other areas of the engine did not. The study was over 100 hours with undoubtedly favorable conditions to get the results desired, so attempting to draw any conclusions about what any of this means for long term reliability is not possible. It might be worth considering if someone owns a car from the decade or so of poorly designed direct injected engines that are prone to deposits, but if someone decided to drive 10 miles out of the way to get TOP TIER™, they are playing a fool's game. If it is already at your Costco, why not? Personally, I'm very comfortable that Sam's doesn't choose to engage in this money grab to license their product as TOP TIER™, since not being TOP TIER™ does not mean you have less detergents.
You have to use critical thinking in these things. If adding a little more detergent really added 4% to fuel efficiency and simultaneously decreased emissions, there's no damned way the EPA wouldn't increase the minimum fuel requirements. The truth is that most fuel in the nation would qualify for TOP TIER™ if they decided to pay TOP TIER™ for the privelege of branding that way.
Top tier fuel is a badge companies pay for, similar to good housekeeping & to jd power for more validity. Just because a company doesn't opt for the top tier badge, it doesn't mean it isn't good gas.
I am waiting for a free or near free offer. Cannot justify $20.
Yeah unfortunately it seems the days of free Sam's memberships with additional goodies are long gone. Still worth it for me as I always come ahead over the year with some sales or something

The additives distinguishes the difference between Top Tier and non-Top Tier. It's not just the badge they can purchase without putting in additives in their fuel. If you take a survey of mechanics, and auto OEMs... they pretty much all recommend Top Tier, but it's not a requirement. That said, changing your car's oil every 5K is recommended, but some people go 7.5K-10K-12K+. It's your car, and your choice... but Top Tier gas is better than non-Top Tier gas. That said Costco gas is Top Tier, and is just as cheap as Sam's (and cheaper than non-club gas stations). Another analogy would be... when you buy USDA Prime steak, you get a steak that meets certain standards. That doesn't mean if you buy non-USDA graded steak it's going to be bad... but it's very likely going to be industrial quality.
It seems like they had a free or free after purchase within the last year. Anyway, as much as I would like it for occasional frozen food & such on sale, there is no way I would save $20 worth.
And my sister is a member so if I just have to have something I will get her to take me.
I have been going to Costco for years without being a member. By using a Costco gift card. But the last time I went I tried to use a card with no money on it and they refused it.
I am sure I've done it a half dozen times before. But I have more with small balances for future visits.
Problem is Costco is 35 minutes away, Sams is 5 minutes.
So you knew before you even clicked into the thread than you had no interest in the deal. But you did it anyway, and just had to knock it. Good job!
I prefer Costco but Sam's is nearby and has better prices than Walmart on some things. Some of their unique grocery items are both good and cheap, like some of their prepared foods and meats. I don't like paying either, but I more than make my $20 back. Some people love their ready to eat pizza, too, which you aren't getting at Walmart.

That's my main motivation for being a Sam's member - they're like 6-7 minutes from home, Costco (which I prefer) is like 25 minutes away and almost never on my way anywhere.
Costco has been cracking down on things like shared membership cards, making you show them your card when you check out. That's so they can match the picture to your face, although I don't think they're actually looking most of the time. They want that membership fee.

What do you really get for the upgrade? I gave them the feedback they requested once and the manager, who was new, responded with an apology and upgraded me to Plus. I didn't get anything out of that though because I don't shop there that much, and it meant my renewal cost doubled! So I cancelled at renewal time and found another deal for the regular membership.
Sounds like your mechanic is full of sh1t. The gas all comes from the same refinery. Instead why don't you look in your manual and see what octane that engine calls for. That is the only real difference. I'll just say this now, higher octane doesn't mean better or more power/efficiency.
Top tier fuel means more detergent, not higher octane reading.
F that door greeter. I ignore them completely and walk on past
Tip: if you say you need to pick up a prescription, they cannot deny you entrance. You do not need to be a member to use the pharmacy - that's illegal. However, members get better pricing, and Plus members get 10 common meds free.
Just make sure to head towards the pharmacy first and out of the greeter's sight before making a beeline for the food court.
