A liner is nice in that it hangs in the shower / tub to keep water from getting all over your floor. A lot of people have a liner that hangs inside the shower and blocks water and then a decorative shower curtain over that that never gets wet and just... looks better than just a progressively grosser looking piece of semi-clear plastic. If you only have one you may be already using it as a liner as well.

But you do you! A lot of people also just get the plastic liner and only use that. Functionally it's the same and cheaper. The liners with weights / magnets at bottom are nice because they stick to the side of the tub / wall easier and make a better "seal" to keep water in. Or just use a decorative curtain as a liner. Or just use a curtain and get water all over your floor if it doesn't bother you. The most important part of any shower curtain purchase is being true to yourself.

Go to Walmart and get the $1 to $2 clear basic ones. It won't have weights and will be just one thin sheet of plastic that you'll throw away when you move apartments.

These ones are only a few bucks more and typically the fabric types feel a lot nicer, though. They don't get nasty as quickly, and can easily be run through the wash. I actually far prefer them over the vinyl/plastic ones, and think they have a longer lifespan overall.

Liner or bust!
Toss it when it molds and get a new one for $1-$2.

The plastic ones at the dollar tree even have the weights. Studies have shown the plastic ones off gas pretty bad so I stick with the fabric ones. They're usually $6-$8 at TJs or Marshalls but will pick up a few of these at $5. Have to wash them monthly or they get pink or moldy at the bottom. Not sure why they say no bleach but I have bleached them with success. It may lose some water repellent but still work well.
