Notice how you're getting lots of down votes. Give yourself a minute and try to figure out why.

By the way if your use case is gaming then why are you looking at a 16 core workstation CPU? The x3D chips are what you should be looking at.

If you need a motherboard the bundle is a much better deal.

A 3600X isn't anywhere close to the performance of a 3950X and I'm not sure where you're getting that 20% gain number. The 5950X absolutely destroys the 3600X in multi threaded tasks.

Is it worth upgrading from my 3950x CPU on to this one? (it would be compatible w my existing x570 board)

I do lots of After Effects & Premiere and getting a new Mobo for the latest 7000 series chips (or incoming 8000 series) is outta the question at present due to a recent diagnosis of being broke af.
Not much of a difference unless you're will to buy this and sell that..

Was it a direct swap or did you have to upgrade the mobo as well ?

Maybe 5950xt3d release in 2025?
Honestly I'd buy that to extend the life of my AM4 system which currently has a 5900X. I already have 64GB of DDR4 so might as well stick to the same platform as long as I can.

Agreed, I'm on a 3600X which is close to his performance and 20% gain for @$320 is hard to swallow. My options at this point seem to just be moving to an AM5 or Intel and since each entails a new Mobo.....

Direct swap but check your bios version. My bios was updated beforehand but my motherboard needed version 1.3 or greater to be compatible.

I assume you need water cooling to run this..idk seems expensive still for old cpu
Box says heatsink not included... I ran one under a Noctua just fine ran cooler than my 5800x at daily tasks...

Yes, it is very close. And since my use case doesn't care about multi threading your point is irrelevant.

Makes sense in a normal world. 1/3 the price for a 3 year old chip, but wait... Didn't the prices jack because of shortages. Are they still manufacturing this chip or is it backstock? It would seem odd that they would be manufacturing this chip today, no?

I'm not saying anything about the performance or quality of this chip, just that 3 years ago, we paid hefty premiums for basic chips because there was a shortage. If there were a shortage, how is there left over stock after 3 years?
Semiconductor production is purchased as "wafer starts." AMD clearly didn't bank on 5nm having the capacity or reliability they needed so they bought tons of 7nm wafer capacity from TSMC. Use it or lose it, they're still having wafers made and still selling dies at a profit.

Your facts about semiconductor manufacturing are solid, but your reasoning on 5nm not being as good as AMD had hoped for, so they bought more 7nm manufacturing is not well founded in my opinion--- Zen 4 exceeded AMD's expectations, and they reached their goals early on from what I understand.

The reason they have so many of these chiplets is because they are the same chiplets used for Epyc Milan. They have so many different chips that they can move these chiplets into, so the 5950x is just one of those release valves, one in which they can move twice as many chiplets through vs 8 core Zen 3 chips...

They could probably do even more with the chiplet tech. They could do a 5950X3D if they had to. If they had an over-supply of B550 or X570 motherboards, they could make a chip with Zen 4 chiplets and a Zen 3 IO die. If they had an under-supply of those motherboards with an over-supply of Zen 3 chiplets (and this would be the real Goat for multithreading performance), we could see AMD release chips with Zen 3 chiplets with a Zen 4 IO die that would slot into B650 and X670 motherboards worth DDR5. That really probably the only thing that would get me to move to Zen 5; otherwise, I'll just save my money and wait for AM6.

That would be awesome considering I'm on a 5600X and plan on skipping AM5 and going to AM6 instead. My current GPU is maxed out now and have a lg. backlog of games.
