The 1GB data cap is no issue since it would be on Wi-Fi all the time.

For access away from wifi the sim cards are $1.99. Here is the old thread: https://slickdeals.net/f/17296423-textnow-unlimited-talk-text-voip-sim-card-activation-kit-0-99-free-s-h?src=SiteSearc
They have been saying for many months this pricing will decrease but who knows when.
Note that add-on data for this plan is much more expensive than their other plans, so if you do EVER use over 1GB it's easy for this plan to become a not-great-value. If you think you will even somewhat occasionally add data, look at their Shared Data plans instead.
A huge advantage to US Mobile is (apparently) it's easy to switch your line between Verizon and T-Mobile (and they're adding an app function to let you do this yourself soon, by clicking a button in the app). They're also adding AT&T "soon" (apparently they do have beta users testing it out), and you should be able to switch between that easily as well. I read during trials you can't switch, but after that it's very easy (though currently you have to talk to customer support, though I've heard theirs is good).
Note when comparing that taxes are **VERY** important for some of us to pay attention to. My ~$6 unlimited talk/text + $2/GB data mobileX plan ended up just shy of $10/month before adding any data. When you're talking cheap plans, recovery fees can add huge percentages to otherwise low bills very quickly. Often you can't find out the fees until your first bill, either. They vary a lot by carrier even if they aren't included - some just charge sales tax, others charge more fees, etc.
At first I wanted a very inexpensive plan just for talk/text for a second line (i'd just always use data on my primary line). The cheapest I found was Hello Mobile at $5/mo all taxes included with 512 MB (T-Mobile). The lite plan is close though I didn't want to do annual with a new provider right away.
I'll probably switch to their pooled data plans: 2 lines for $18/month base all taxes/fees, I can keep one line on tmobile and the other on verizon for better coverage and still have data/etc. The top-up pricing being more expensive on the lite plan made me decide against using it. Plus it being monthly is nice just in case I do have service problems. (Like mobileX is on verizon and I expected it to be good, but it was awful coverage, lots of dropped calls, etc).
Unfortunately they got rid of the plan I was planning (heh) to get: their $15/mo annual plan changed from a 10 GB WITH tethering plan to a 10 GB soft cap and an extra charge for tethering :3
Regardless US Mobile will still be way cheaper and more versatile than, eg, Mint Mobile (which adds some hefty taxes and fees in my area).
