Before each burn, trim the wick to about a 1/8". or the width of the scissor blade.
It limits the amount of soot and smoke.

I've never noticed that to be an issue myself, but have read frequently that if you cut the wick short, it reduces smoke.

You can prevent the candle smoking by cutting the wick short. Should be roughly 1/4 inch.
