As a person with 300+ games, I can say this is one of my least fav games ever, and I like the regular version of betrayal...
I can understand where you're coming from, but for me, Betrayal at Baldur's Gate improves upon the original formula by seamlessly blending it with the rich lore of D&D. The mid-game switch of the 'haunt' system is particularly well-executed, avoiding the issue of starting the haunt too early that sometimes occurs in the original game. It's all about finding the right balance between challenge and enjoyment!

Also a 300+ boardgamer. My faves are Azul and the Scoundrels expansion with lords of waterdeep. There are so many good ones.
OG HeroQuest was pretty great as a kid (new one is identical but with twice the box for no reason).
