This film is definitely in the top five of John Carpenter's filmography. The other four in no particular order - The Thing, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape From New York and They Live.
Dark Star and Assault on Precinct 13 are great too. All of his 70s and 80s movies are classics in my opinion. I never get tired of watching any of them
I never knew Starman was a John Carpenter. Huh. Great movie!

Super flick to rewatch for youthful reminiscing.

Another acquisition option is the HDX version for $2 via D2D. I find most HDX versions of films of this era look excellent and the extra $3 for 4K unnecessary, BUT...

This excerpt from 4K review may compel me to spring for the 4K upgrade:

Taken from the lavish book included in the set, the following notes on the restoration state:

"For the 4K restoration of Starman, we scanned the original negative at Cineric Inc. in New York. Digital restoration was also completed at Cineric. Color correction and finishing was completed at Roundabout Entertainment in Santa Monica, with colorist David Bernstein."

This restoration produces a breath-taking native 4K image in 3840 x 2160p resolution in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1. It utilises a 10-bit video depth, WCG and High Dynamic Range colour grade passes (both HDR10 and Dolby Vision) and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec.

Opening with a series of VFX shots completed optically doesn't really prepare you for the absolute majesty of this new restoration and transfer from Sony. But would we have expected anything less?

Fine detail is beautifully organic, presenting Carpenter's lovely Panavision anamorphic shooting style absolutely perfectly. While at times the edges of the frame give into slight blurriness, exactly as it should thanks to the anamorphic lens distortions, the rest of the image is just wonderfully nuanced and textured. Artificial edges of the likes of Allen's hot-rod Mustang are pristine – razor sharp and wonderfully delineated with no digital support from sharpening tools noted anywhere; but it's in the more natural details, such as the clothing textures and more importantly, the faces (so wonderfully employed in close-up) where this immaculate level of detail really shines. Every bump, every blemish, every beautiful little detail is there for all to see and again, it's presented so naturally that it's often hard to believe we're watching a wholly digital image. There is depth, there is tactility, there is a feel to the image that screams 'CELLULOID'. And it is utterly glorious. This filmic notion is more than supported by the incredibly fine grain field prevalent throughout. Even and always moving naturally as the inherent part of the image that it is, it's another wonderful presentation of a natural 35mm image that shows the level of care that has gone into this restoration.

...a truly stunning visual presentation...
The new HDR10/Dolby Vision colour grading is also gorgeously sumptuous – at times, it pushes the primaries hard…almost too hard. The reds of Bridges shirt and especially his cap can, on the odd occasion, standout just a little too much from the rest of the image; the neon blues of the alien technology however are wonderfully cool, bold, and unearthly; while the gaudy lights of the Las Vegas strip are punchy and beautifully bright…and with the bold max frame average light level one of the highest I've seen (in the high 700 nits), it's a rich, bright and nicely strident colour grade that supports the at times otherworldly nature of the film. But at the other end of the spectrum, the more natural end, it delivers a delightfully balanced set of organic shades – from the lush greens and earthy desert tones of the backdrop of our pair's journey to the delicate and intricate shades of the skin textures, it never feels anything but wholly authentic and realistic, helped by a nicely wide contrast ratio that goes from those deep blacks to eye-popping brights with ease…there's nothing more to say than it's a rich, dazzling and beautifully presented colour grade.

Finally, the restoration doesn't drop the ball at the smaller stuff either – all debris in the source has been eliminated as has any judder or wobble and to round it all off, the compression work to get the presentation on to the disc is superb: high bit rates of the high 80's mbps were noted from a quick scan of the disc's playback information and it leaves the image perfectly presented.

We have come to expect superb work from Sony and despite this, there are some releases that still wholly impress…Starman is another to add to that list. A truly stunning visual presentation.

We reviewed this region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Starman on a JVC-DLA N5 Ultra HD 4K projector and a Panasonic DP-UB820 4K UHD player.

Starman 4K Audio
Starman
The following soundtrack options are available on the 4K disc:

English Dolby Atmos (with a Dolby TrueHD core)
English, German and Italian DTS-HD MA 5.1
English DTS-HD MA 2.0
French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1
Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0
Subtitles are English and English SDH, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Korean, Mandarin (traditional and simplified), Norwegian, Swedish, Thai and Turkish.

With so many tracks to choose from (I'm not sure if the English 2.0 is the original theatrical Dolby Stereo track or not), it'd be rude not to head straight to the new Dolby Atmos track for starters…and frankly, after a few seconds listen, I never switched away from it throughout the film's entire run-time (other than to spot check technical merits of the others of course).

...considering just how powerful, seamless, enveloping and just how 'good' the new Atmos track sounds...I'd be surprised if all but the most hardened purists opted for anything else...
Immediately powerful and absolutely cohesive, the opening with the space craft being shot down perfectly demonstrates the superb audio characteristics of this new remix: bass is incredibly deep, the spectacular crash landing shocking the subwoofer into life, but never obviously or overtly so; it's a very agile and active track, with hard pans across the speaker array utilised at every chance (most noticeable for all the vehicles flying or driving across the screen), but they sound super-smooth and seamless. The surround channels are used mostly for ambience and atmospherics, including enveloping the listener in Nitzsche's superb music, but they never sound forced or tacked on. Of course, the overheads buzz into life nicely at times too, especially in the film's raucous third act as an armada of helicopters swirl around the Arizona meteor crater, but the cacophony of sound sounds absolutely immersive, with no gaps noted anywhere in the Atmos bubble. The overheads aren't permanently in action – for most of the film, it's a quiet, thoughtful character piece after all – but they are beautifully integrated and when they do blare into life, it never feels jarring or a shock that they do.

Dialogue is absolutely pristine and sits high in the mix, perfectly prioritised against and embedded organically within the backdrop of music and sound effects, with no lip sync or sibilance noted at any time. And as for the music, it mirrors the tonal qualities of the rest of the track, with energy coming from how immediate it sounds – it has a lovely dynamic range, going from haunting and lilting one minute to rousing and soul stirring the next with absolute precision and its spread across the frequency range from very low to bright highs is wide and smooth, with no harshness or overt brightness noted at all.

The other two English tracks sound perfectly fine, but considering just how powerful, seamless, enveloping and just how 'good' the new Atmos track sounds and how natural it feels, despite being a wholly new construct, I'd be surprised if all but the most hardened purists opted for anything else. Again, Sony are to be congratulated for not just including the new track but giving audiences choice when it comes to their audio preference.

We reviewed the region free UK Ultra HD Blu-ray release of Starman on a Denon AVR4300 and a 7.2.4 array of Kef speakers (including the Q range and ci in-walls/in-ceilings).

Agreed. It's too bad all attempts at remakes and reboots of his films have been horrible cash grabs. The Fog, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13, and Halloween all pale in comparison to the originals and I am not holding out hope for any possible iterations of The Thing or Big Trouble to be any good either.

A seriously underrated movie. I recommend checking this out if you haven't seen it, especially at the $5 price point.

News to me as well. It seems very Un-Carpenter-like.
