Be aware that these are the base M1 models with binned 7-core GPUs, only 2 ports and no touchID on the keyboard. I'd personally recommend spending the extra &100 on the 8-core GPU model with 4 ports and touchID (as well as Ethernet on the power cable).

Amazing deal for an incredible screen, dead silent operation, and fast speeds all around for non-gamers (and even some games are starting to appear for MacOS!!).

The only question: If it's worth another $50 to get the (admittedly, orange only) model with touchID (easier logins and authentications), 1/8th more GPU grunt, 2 more USBC ports, and an ethernet port in the power supply (which is surprisingly convenient!)

I'd say it IS worth another $50 for most people: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/imac...22Deals%22

(Just click on M1 8 Core and then the orange color to see the $850 price)

The best 'deal' is probably open box M1 8 GPU-core (touchID) for $800, excellent condition. That would be worth getting…

Pulled the trigger and bought this iMac. Our current iMac is a 2011. Thanks.

I had the same problem, but we got a Mac Studio when it was on sale at Costco for 1500. Double the cost for sure and sans monitor but way more capable. Depends on your needs which fits best.

It's just super disappointing to see they haven't updated the 27" or come out with a larger size for so many years.
Mac Studio + 27" Studio Display is a potent combo, and outdoes the 27" i9 intel machines and even the iMac Pro.

The antenna issue was a design flaw, not a cost cutting measure. To be fair Apple has had a few more product design flaws and misses since then -- the butterfly keyboard comes to top of mind, but there are others too. But for whatever unintentional misses some Apple products may have had it has a better record making quality products than its competitors who intentionally make a lot of junk for a low price point.

And please don't talk to me about how Windows machines are a better value. This Dell Inspiron 24" all-in-on with 8GB RAM and an Intel Core 5 proc [dell.com] is the exact same price. I can guarantee you the iMac is a better build quality. For one the iMac has a 4K screen and the Dell has a FHD from probably back when the iPhone 4 came out.

You say toh-may-toh, I say tah-mah-toh. They didn't get to be one of the most profitable companies in the world without snippin' away at those corners!

But keep defending them, they appreciate it.

Agreed. But note that's not really saying much, as they are years old at this point. The entry level studio performs like a modern Intel i5, give or take.

The more entry level m3 performs like an i3 or a two to three year old i5.

That's about all I do also. I know it's only the M1 chip, but I put my 2011 next to it and loaded the same content and saw no difference in speed at all. Maybe I will consider the newer M3 when they go on sale. Hope you see a difference! It is a good deal!
Be wary of this users opinion for we do not know their background.

If they are still using a 2011 and trying to tell you about a 2021 model...

This would be like listening to your grandma with her 20 year old laptop telling you it's as fast as the ones in store.

Be very cautious of the advice you heed from online.

No offense Gary but with your down votes, it seems you are an outlier. I currently use a 2021 m1 and Asus zenbookand have owned many macs and Windows before

I disagree with the Intel to Mx comparisons, and I have several of each on hand. Both standard benchmarks and performance-per-watt, they M1/M2/M3 blow Intel out of the water unless you're talking about the very high-end $250+ desktop CPUs.

Realistically speaking at this price this is a good deal, but I think I would value the M1 MacBook Air for its portability. At roughly the same price.

You are clueless to make such a comparison.

I'll compare 2020 M1 to a 2021 INTEL Core-i5 11th gen because I'm feeling generous as 10th gen Intel is also a joke.

MacBook Air (Late 2020)
2391
Single-Core Score
8739
Multi-Core Score

Intel Core i5-1145G
CPU Benchmark Scores
1694
Single-Core Score
4949
Multi-Core Score

Even the 12th gen CPU cannot compete... lol.

So funny you're looking to compare 2020 M1 CPU to "recent intel". what a fail.

Intel sucks, Qualcomm will kill it when Snapdragon X performs as advertised. Even the Ultra Chip is not performing well enough and 13th and 14th gen cpus are having problems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrxhOziVOuI

Intel is struggling and hoping to capture the AI market with their new chip. Good luck competing with Nvidia and all of the big tech creating their own chips.

why choose an i5 1145G to compare with? Why not a flagship mobile chip?

I agree the M1 is awesome, but where are you even getting those numbers from? Cinebench? Geekbench? Something else????

Proving you wrong is just trivial.

i5-14600K: ST: 4300 / MT: 39384
M2 Max: ST: 4152 / MT: 26324

My statement: The M2 Max performs like a modern i5 is exactly correct, except in multicore where Intel walks all over the Apple chip.

The i5-14600K(F) is a $300 chip that soon will be just $200 and even $150 once Intel releases another iteration. It's cheap.

i3-14100: ST: 3784 MT: 15478 << current i3
i5-12600K: ST: 3954, MT: 27747 << 3 generations old i5, $200 - a cheap chip
M3: ST: 4844, MT 19553

My statement: The M3 performs like a current i3, or a few-years old i5 is pretty close - it's almost 25% faster than both at SC, but in the middle between them in MC, being about 25% slower than the old i5 in MC. But compared to that modern i5, it's really slow - about 1/2 the speed in MC.

Elon Musk, you're fired.

* All numbers: Passmark. Prove 'em with a quick Google.

I've owned an M1 Studio (Max) and currently own an M2 Studio (Ultra). I'm pretty familiar with them. Sure, if you're coming from some old Mac, the Studio (Max) is great, but if you're used to modern Intel, the Max model is nothing special. I am very used to modern Intel, as I'd been running a Hackintosh with an i5-12400 for quite some time. Compared to that, the M1 Studio (Max) was pretty disappointing.

To my defense, I've clearly noted Studio in all of this. If I cared about performance per watt, and needed to run a laptop, I agree that the Macs are a great choice; I have a MBP14" M3 Pro also, and it's grand. But it isn't grand because it's lightning fast (it's not); it's grand because it runs MacOS, is fully and completely integrated with everything Macintosh, has battery life for eons, and has a great form factor, great screen, great audio, and great support from Apple, including real human people to talk to at my local mall if I ever feel like it.

Why would he limit this to laptop chips when I clearly mention Studio, a desktop model?

I also run a 12400, it's in my gaming box paired with a 3090. For non-gaming tasks the M1 Max Studio does everything better.
