For those wondering about 24" for a desk.
I've been using the Karlby from IKEA for the last 4 years and love it. It was $100+ more than this so this is a great price for a solid wood desktop.

The Karlby though has a depth of ~26" and I use some mounts from Amazon for the monitors to save on desktop space. I temporariliy had an LG 42" C2 and that was too large for the space (I couldn't sit far enough from it) so I had to wall mount it behind the desk. Right now though I'm rocking an Alienware 32" 4K OLED and it's the max size I'd recommend for a 16x9 for a desk of this depth.

I'm adding a pic of my Karlby setup with it with a large Fractal Torrent case, 34" ultrawide and dual 27" monitors so ya'll can have an idea (it's what I had set up till the 32" a month or two ago).

Kind of an in-depth response, but personally I think it's a great deal and 24" depth should be enough for most users though it's cutting it close.

Any woodworker here? What's a good way to darken this, like mahogany tone or such, evenly, with still some of the wood patterns showing?

Try again..the husky countertop is a Finished butcherblock..
We're talking about using this for DIY projects right? I mean if you're really that worried about it, ten bucks or so for a spray can and a sheet of sandpaper will get you about as nice of a finish as you're gonna get from a pre-made garage workbench like this. (If you think a cheap slab of wood from a big box store is gonna have a fine furniture kind of finish, I'm afraid you're in for a disappointment.) And with a quick DIY finish you'd be able to choose what kind of sheen and color you want, too.

It has clear poly or similar on it, if you want darker get the unfinished countertop at Lowe's as linked on here.

I wonder what the finish is really like on these things. It would be nice to see it up close.
Just go to your nearest HD, you can see it in real life.

*Apparently these type of things are not in everyone's local HD. Here in MO they are widely available in store.

Get a plain butcherblock countertop: they sell them at HD, Lowes and Menards. A big plus is that you can get them in "kitchen island" sizes and get a depth of your choice. Use a router to round or angle the edges in any profile you like. Lightly sand it. If you didn't router the edges, use sandpaper to relieve the edges a little.

Get water-based stain, tinted black (or any other color you prefer). Put it on with a brush, let it sit a few moments, then rub it back off with a rag. Lightly sand to knock back the wood grain that was raised by the stain, repeat to get the darkness desired, then coat it with a polyurethane coating in your choice of gloss.

It looks awesome.

PM me and I can send you photos of a desk I made using butcherblock countertop slabs and the electric sit-stand desk bases that were on sale at Amazon for ~$100 last year. I plan to make at least two more sets.
