1. Is there a foolproof way of unlocking this ? A lot of users reported that they couldn't unlock and were stuck with activation fees and prorated bill
2. What if we cancel the account in 3 day time frame, and use this device with our prepaid?

You can use it on ATT prepaid/MVNO without unlocking and yes there are reports of people not able to unlock but I guess something has gone wrong in some steps. As I mentioned ATT will send you a bill but it's not difficult at all to get rid of all charges. I guess that's what you need to do to get a heavily discounted phone.
