I've always bought an aluminum version and put a case/band on it—until last year when I went with a stainless series 8. I must say the stainless steel makes a huge difference. I prefer the cleaner look. No more cleaning gunk out of the cases. However, you do need to put a screen protector. I did find small scratches and dots so I slapped on a protective film. It's been great since.

But... it's sapphire glass, you shouldn't need anyting on the stainless ones
Seems like an overpriced watch that only works with an overpriced phone. Regardless, this isn't for me, I'm just astounded the prices now. For a watch.
I agree— smart watches aren't for everyone, especially the higher-end ones. Their usefulness is fairly niche, despite their popularity. I've been kinda spoiled as far as watches go since childhood, so my views on techie watches are probably not the norm. If Apple didn't come out with one, I think they would've eventually died off. Or maybe Samsung would've kept toying with them to get them right. (I loved my pre-applewatch Samsung with a camera but as an actual useful device is was a joke. that was a LONG time ago though. First useful/reasonable "smart" watch for me was the pebble). I was actually initially annoyed when Apple came out with it, just like I hated when they came out with a smart phone and everyone was like "oh look they invented the smartphone" as I shook my PPC6700-weilding fist at them. But here we are.
If I didn't have them (watch + phone) paid for by my work, I would still be sticking with the more affordable $0-$300 apple phones and sub-$200 watches. Still do this for the kids (phones at least) and have been able to keep them fairly updated every few years.

It is scratch-resistant, not scratch-proof. While not very noticeable, you can see them under reflected light. May not bother some but screen films are cheap and effective.
