If you have hardwired alarms, it's best to have the same model for all, otherwise you can get unexplained alarms going off.

Vacuum out your alarms every 6 months (or more often if you have a lot of dust or spiders). Debris building up inside them can cause them to fail or alarms to go off inexplicably. If you're remodeling or doing something that will create a lot of dust, remove the alarm temporarily.

Ionization alarms are the ones that cause a lot of nuisance alarms (the ionization only alarms are the ones that tend to be dirt-cheap). Some have started recommending photoelectric only (or mostly photoelectric only and maybe one combined photoelectric/ionization). Keep ionization alarms out of areas near the kitchen and bathrooms (moisture from bathrooms can set the alarm off).

Buying CO monitors separate from fire alarms means that if one alarm mechanism goes bad, you don't have to replace the whole thing. Unfortunately, some states now require them to be combined - but if you own your own house, you can do what you want (unless you give an inspector some reason to require you meet the regulation, like remodeling).

Your comment cannot be blank.

The 10 year smoke alarms will not last 10 years. I bought a bunch for a new house and had to replace the majority within 3 years.
On the flip side of that, we bought all new ten- year alarms just about six years ago, and they're all doing fine.
These have a manufacturer's warranty of 10-years.

Why would you buy the First Alert SMI100 9V smoke detector when you can get Kidde $5 ones any day at Home Depot?

edit: wow, the one at home depot is now $8. that's quite a price increase.
last time i bought those the bulk price was $3.80 a pop, reg indiv price was $4.99.

edit 2: can get the one i referenced above from amazon for a buck cheaper than home depot currently ($7)

edit 3: can get a 2-pack at Walmart for $11

If I interconnect them to each other will they still be connected to my ring alarm app?

I'm looking for a smoke/CO2 detector, hard wired, but with no battery of any kind. I used to buy them, but now are hard to find. Any ideas?

Highly disappointed with first alert CO & smoke detector. They have two AA instead of 9V and my hardwire ones run out in 5 months instead of 18-22 months on previous contractor grade.

Yup. I usually change the batteries every 2yrs
10 year smoke alarms have the battery soldered directly to the board. Replacing it is a PITA and the battery usually cost more then just replacing the alarm.

Why there's no more deals on wired alarms? Do manufacturers stop making them anymore? I have a wired system, can I replace a few of the alarms with battery-driven ones?

My new home in Cali (built in mid 2019) came with 4 SMI100-AC and one similar model smoke/CO2 combo, all hardwired and replaceable battery combo. I've had to replace the battery in each of them only once since then and have had zero false or nuisance alarms. Actually 2 of them I've replaced the batteries twice so far, but the 2nd time I replaced with rechargeable lithium 9V batteries and no issues with that. The only con of these units is that replacing the batteries can be annoying with the way the battery tray works.

Be aware that battery only fire alarms are not supposed to be installed over the electrical boxes for the hardwired alarms (at least according to the installation instructions). I've heard that doing so can invite more nuisance alarms as well.

i am not sure about these but some brands go beyond that. Kidde, eg, has programmed their monitors to send annoying beeps at 10 year point forcing you to discard the monitor whether or not they still work.

FWIW if you have interconnected alarms you probably want to replace them all together (same models help avoid false alarms, all likely expire at the same time, etc.)

This isn't a bad deal for a pretty standard alarm from a reputable brand but you can usually buy a 4-pack of Kidde or First Alert alarms any day at the big box for ~$60-70.

The life span of a smoke alarm is technically 10 years *from the date of manufacture* and Amazon is sometimes sketchy about selling old/counterfeit electronics. Especially if you go for the sealed battery models, make sure you're not getting an old one that won't actually last you 10 years.

when i read your comment i felt that for some reason using rechargeables is wrong. so i googled it:

Most alarm manufacturers like First Alert recommend against using rechargeable batteries to power your alarm. Rechargeable batteries lose charge faster and have a shorter runtime than standard batteries. The NFPA requires a standard amount of backup time that rechargeable batteries don't offer.

I bought two Kidde sealed CO2/Smoke detectors in 2013. They were advertised with a seven year life span. Here in 2024 they are still going strong. Very happy with the quality of the Kidde brand!
And yes I test them every year.
