Just wanted to verify my timeline for doing this is right.
- Buy Galaxy a14 on Monday.
- Two day shipping, arrives Wednesday. (Business Day #2)
- Pay off phone Wednesday and make a call/text. (Can I pay off phone earlier - before it arrives?)
- Cancel service Thursday (Business Day #3 - last day to avoid activation fee)
- Leave in drawer without service for 60 days, tweak apps, SD card, settings....
- Unlocked automatically
- Use on any USA network (probably US Mobile).

Saying "pay off device" is sending me a text message instead of paying off.
Go to Verizon store and payoff with cash. Keep phone with you as they send message to your phone for verification.

The automatic system tells you that you are ineligible to pay off this phone until mid May.
This doesn't work. When calling 611, saying "pay off device", then it sends me a link. Following that link, the system tells me I can't pay off for 30 days.
I haven't tried going into a corporate store yet though.
Today is day 3 for me. I'll have to swing by a store and see if I can pay off. Otherwise, I'll be canceling and returning.

I have tried the methods mentioned on slickdeals about getting the iPhone 12 paid off but each method did not work.

iPhone 12 arrived on 4/24/2024 and I activated it on the same day.

I called the phone number 800-922-0204 and said "pay off device" and received a text message. Once you click the link it'll take to you to a chat screen just to tell you that you can not pay off the device until 5/15/2024.

On 4/25/2024I went to a corporate Verizon store and the rep looked up the account and said that I can not pay off the device until 5/2/2024 and there's no way around it.

I then went home to find out that Verizon had already sent me an bill of $124.62 ( $35 one time activation fee, $75 monthly plan, $2.75/month device fee, $7.73 surcharge fees, and $4.14 Taxes & Gov fees).

So I call the number on the bill which was 800-922-0204. I told them I wanted to cancel my phone plan and phone line. The rep said that he'll be glad to help me do it. he said that I'll need to take my phone and return to the store where I bought it from. I told him that I bought it from Walmart and they don't take returns. He said that he'll be glad to send me a return kit. I asked him if I could keep the phone. He says that I can if I want to pay the $99 fee which is the cost of the phone. He told me that I'll get a final bill which will show the cost of the $99 for the device. I asked him about waiving the activation fees since I cancelled within 3 days of activating the device. He said that I'll have to call back once I receive the final bill. After we hang up the phone line was quickly deactivated and then the Verizon account online was also deactivated too since I no longer have a valid mobile device with them now.

So now I just to wait until I receive my final bill to pay off the device and discuss with them about getting the activation fee waived and make sure the prorated charges are correct for the 2 days that I had the phone on.

Did you call to "pay off device" on 4/24? I got the phone on the 23rd and activated it and added a credit card to the account. I was trying to pay off the device at night and it kept sending me messages to chat and I couldn't pay off. Next morning (during their working hours) I called again and was able to pay off the device and then I called again to disconnect the service.

Yes, called on 7/24/2024 after activating the iPhone 12. When you say "pay off device" to the automatic system it'll send you a link which indicated that I cannot pay off the device until 5/15/2024.

At least I was able to cancel the plan/phone line/account. I just need to call them back after getting the final bill to deal with activation fees and make sure I was not charged for the whole month and at most for only 2 days.

Surprised 3 Samsung phones are still available:

A14 $1/month or $36 total
A01 $1/month or $36 total
S21FE $2.75/month or $99 total
S22+ $5.53/month or $199 total

All on 36 month contracts if you want to keep the phones.

I wish I could provide better answers/advice but there wasn't just 1 way to do things this time like before. For me, paying off in corporate store and cancelling by phone was the easiest.

I mentioned in the beginning that this was YMMV and not for everybody. I am an existing Verizon customer so it is a little easier for me. Congrats to those that were able to get in on this and sorry to those that had issues and weren't able to get it.

They are not letting me payoff phone for first 30 days.
If i wanna cancel, i must go to store and return device as well and they will refund me completely.
BUT I HAVE TO RETURN DEVICE.
That means i cant get rid of activation fees, and i have to pay first month usage.
Anyone else facing this?

Did you read my post?
When I called 800-922-0204 to cancel my plan the Verizon rep did say that I had to return the iPhone 12 back to the store where I got it from. But I told him that Walmart will not allow returns for Verizon phones purchased from their website. He said that he could send me a return kit. I then asked if I could keep the phone. He said that I could if I would pay the cost of the iPhone 12 which was $99. He said that I just have to wait for the final bill to pay off the phone after I cancel my plan.

It isn't supposed to be necessary, but it's a good idea once the phone is activated to complete a call and a text to be absolutely certain you've registered the device on the network. It'd suck 60 days from now to find out something went wrong and it never registered now you've gotta activate it again and wait another 60 days.

That extra 30 seconds to make a call and send a text is worth the piece of mind.

04/22/24: Ordered Samsung Galaxy A42 5G.
04/24/24: Activated account online and added a credit card for autopay.
04/26/24: Device delivered; Activated service, and made test calls and sent texts.
04/26/24: Paid off device ($36) - Called 800-922-0204 and said 'Pay off device'.
04/27/24: Disconnected service - Called 800-922-0204 and said 'Disconnect service'. Got transferred to an agent who asked why I wanted to cancel the line. I gave some flimsy excuse. Agent proceeded to disconnect the line in less than 5 minutes.

* The line has stopped working; however, I still have access to my account online! I will wait to see what my final bill looks like.

Did they charge you an activation fee?
Can I do this on an existing Verizon line with no activation fee?
