I wish it had at least 12 GB, preferably 16 GB memory.

it's easier for them to push the price lower.
not really hard and expensive to upgrade RAM/SSD by your own if needed.

I know. I actually did it on an older laptop recently. And it probably would be cheaper if I did it myself rather than buying one that matches what I want.

It's a great deal for people who mostly use the computer at home or at office (unless you are a gamer):

- A very capable processor
- With the addition of 8GB ram (which costs like $18), Iris Xe graphics should kick in also.
- USB-C also supports display and power delivery which is a huge plus at this price point.
- IPS (not TN) display is good enough for productivity / office use

Is the memory upgradable? Is there a open slot?

Good deal if you don't need a backlit keyboard. HP puts it on their silver models often, which lacks contrast. These would be well suited for it.

Ancient HDMI spec really hurts the utility of this laptop since that forces you to use the only usb-c for an external monitor

Old wifi is a bummer too but not too huge a deal

I've shopped and bought 16" over this past Xmas. For $399, I'd say this no-gpu weight is a tad high (imo, inexplicably, about 0.5 lbs ), though I'm recollecting the $400-$500 range of laptops I saw.

That said, Imo, this deal is worth a look for its price-point. display quality -- FHD (or a smidgen higher), 300 nits (a pleasant surprise) -- and SODIMM slot available for expansion.

Finally, Fwiw, I ended up getting a 2.5 lb. Acer Swift Edge 16" for $599 (higher display size & quality, weight & cpu oomph compared to this deal config).

Given OP's spec, yes, and it's unpopulated.

I was thinking on pulling the trigger on this, but then saw it's wifi card is wifi 5. *facepalm* why not just put a wifi 6 card in here? Not going to buy now.
