You can find details online, but the biggest differences are build quality, the filter media, and noise.

Build quality is self explanatory.

The aquaclears use filter media baskets instead of cartridges which you can fill with your own media (or combos of media). I run a coarse sponge, polyfill, and bio media in mine, for example. This not only does a better job, but is extremely cheaper than cartridges. You can mod a catridge hang on back to do the same thing, but you still have a cheaper pump to worry about.

Noise is also self explanatory.

Overall, aquaclear is the winner hands down. I would highly recommend getting one. But at this price point? This is still a solid deal.

I do agree Aquaclears are better but $20 vs $60 is definitely not minute. the AC70 would be the equivalent (300GPH) to this filter
agree, i would spend $20 to get this one compare to price. it does the work that all i care.

Thank you for the detailed response brother. Seems like the DIY filtration will pay for itself.

But another question, I have a small tank that I'm going to be using, 10 to 15 gallon, is it a bad idea to get a bigger filter in case I end up upgrading my tank to a larger size in the future?

Is there any downside to that? Thanks!

edit: for reference, I'm looking at this.

The one you listed, the aquaclear 50, is the one I am using as well.

You could absolutely use that in a smaller tank for now if youd like, it has an adjustable flow knob on the top, you can greatly slow down the suction/waterfall for a smaller tank.

I also highly recommend getting a coarse sponge to go over the intake, not only does it prevent fish from getting trapped (or my cherry shrimp) but it also provides another form of filtration. I clean the sponge every other week and the filter media once a month.

Bad idea. The flow and suction is too much for small fish in a 10 to 15 gallon and the size of the filter would take up half the tank giving the fish least space to swim
The flow is adjustable on the aquaclear models, and its a HOB filter. The only part of it actually in the tank is the intake tube which is the same size across all aquaclear modes. Don't see how youd reach to claiming it would take up half the tank space.

Seconding the aquaclears. I used to run these types of filters, but the savings in not doing their cartridges is worth it alone. I have a aquaclear thats been running for at least a decade, the only thing being replaced is filter media and the impeller. The variable flow is nice, too.

Thanks again sir. Do you happen to have a link for an intake sponge? 🙏

I have a stash of old topfin sponges that I zip tie onto the intake, but they don't sell them anymore.

Pretty much any you find on Amazon under "intake sponges" will work, alternatively buy one of the aquaclear sponges designed for that filter and cut a hole in the center of it.

A sponge should last about 6 months worth of cleaning before it falls apart enough to need replacement. On a small tank like you'd like to do, you can go longer.

Just get a canister fish tank filter and call it good. 😃 Your 🐟 🐠 🐡 🍥 and tank will thank you.

Yes they are more expensive but will last you much longer in between cleanings and replacement media. Back in the day, I used to have a 120 and 75 gallon tank using a Fluval canister and my cichlids were so happy. I also used a Eheim Jager 300w aquarium heater and they started to breed, it was so fun.

I decided fish belong in the rivers and oceans after all of them died in my fish tank.

It costs more up front but in the long run it's cheaper.... once you go Fluval you never go back.

Agreed, I have an old Eheim Professional on my 40b planted and it's still running perfectly. Also a big fan of Aquaclears, but I prefer the canister filters, especially Eheims.,
