As an avid Souls and Souls-like fan, I recommend this game. Complex level design, good build variety, tries some new things with the formula. It's got depth -- true to its Souls-like core. The game receives regular updates and the performance issues/bugs that reviewers reported at launch have for the most part been ironed out.

Be warned though! If you tend to lean towards the path of least resistance in these type of games (i.e. meta builds, cookie cutter weapons, etc.), you will find that in the current version of the game a lot of that type of stuff has seen balancing updates.

NG+ is still currently not balanced very well so most people prefer to play regular NG or NG+0 (you are able to carry your character and non-progression/story items over and start a new game without increasing the difficulty). Some of the big updates that were announced and have yet to be released are an enemy randomizer mode, permadeath mode, and other vast playthrough customization options you'd typically only see in modded versions of these types of games.

Interesting that it has NG+0

This game is basically Dark Souls 4. Highly highly recommend. I liked it a lot more than Lies of P

The combat in this is actually legit. What I don't like is the Umbral lamp mechanic and the checkpoint seeds mechanic (I hated that). The Umbral world is a cool idea, but the game relied on it too much, and I always felt really rushed in that world. I also hated having to use the stupid lamp to pull souls from certain enemies before attacking them. Some of the controls were very unintuitive. It's not a great game. There's a reason the price dropped fast. You were able to get this for $40 in no time. If you have the itch for a new Souls-like, get Lies of P. It's significantly better.
