From everything I've read the extreme is worth it. Especially at only $120 more

feel like you coulda just bought them a cheap desktop. coulda came with a monitor keyboard mouse etc, too. even something used on ebay could last longer. i've bought many hp mini machines off ebay.. they're awesome.. been running as servers and desktops. tons of ports and easy to self-upgrade. it was like $70.. that leaves a ton of $$ for a monitor keyboard etc.
For a 100$ you can buy a Mac mini M2, which for desktop use is 10x better

*edit* I meant to say 100$ more than ROG ally

Where can you find an M2 for $100? I can hardly find a 2018 Intel i3 model for much less than $200. Would love to find an Apple silicon model for that price.

Sorry, I was typing on my phone so typo happened. I meant to say 100$ *more* than the ROG ally.

M2 Mac mini is 500$ on sale usually.

Sorry about that

I'm over 2 years of owning my deck (got lucky and was the tip of wave 1!) And have to say I'm still amazed at how good it is. I often play RE4 REmake mercenaries on it and have no problem with the performances. I love all the little tweaks to optimization you can make (lower refresh rate to 40 for the screen, tweak the CPU wattage and GPU frequency on the fly to save battery etc) and the support is amazing.

Which, I kind of can't believe that I'm saying Valve support is amazing, but that's just what it is. I've had friends botch an install of custom hall effect sticks on their board and Valve replaced the unit anyway.

I'd absolutely suggest, if you can, getting the 64 and adding memory as needed, especially with how cheap it is, and just how well supported the deck is overall.
Thanks, I went with the SD 64 and upgrading. I saw some drivers Valve offered for Win 11 for the SD which should make the experience a little easier so Valve isn't totally ignoring that side of it. I might do a dual boot since they said that Win 11 will be the primary OS after installing, which is what I wanted. I should be able to choose to boot into Steam OS as a secondary.

I feel exactly the same and posted a similar opinion not long ago. I also got downvoted. Just want to say ignore the haters!
The question isn't whether installing W11 over SteamOS is a good idea. The question is which hardware is better head-to-head if they're both on W11??

I need Windows 11 because Roblox is a requirement for us. Roblox (wine, vinegar, grape juice, whatever) no longer works on Steam Deck with SteamOS. I also don't necessarily need the Extreme because we're mostly playing Roblox and non-AAA titles.

So you can imagine my frustration when trying to compare the Rog Ally (base) and the Steam Deck+W11 is only ever met with "Well you should only use SteamOS anyway" and "Don't buy the base model, only buy Extreme."

Save and get the extreme version. You'll regret it later if you get the z1
Depends on what you're gonna do with it. I mainly use mine as an emulation machine, the Z1E won't make a big difference there, though I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Was hoping it was the extreme model haha
I picked up an open box extreme version for $520 at best buy and luckily it was gently used. I unloaded all my BB gift cards and points to get it for about half that. So far, it's a pretty decent unit.

The extreme is the version that actually has decent performance improvements over a deck, I have seen many posters on other sites claim that if you aren't getting the Extreme, you might as well get a steam deck in most cases.

This is sound advice, assuming all prices stay the same. The Z1 non extreme fluctuates and there was a short period where Best Buy had it for $299.99 overnight and that was actually a steal because it's an emulator power house. The GPU helps in graphics obviously but will mostly be for disc based games era and later, but the extra processors will actually help better for emulation. At $299, if you are buying one for emulation, it is the best way to go. at $379 it is debatable.
If the price is $500 versus Extreme's $600 or $700 then everyone's recommendation to pay higher for the better model makes sense.

Is it better to buy SD 64gb $279 + DIY 2tb + Windows 11 or just getting this? Which hardware is stronger at this price range?
As someone who put Windows on their deck day one and kept itike this for over a year, id say get a steam deck, join the steam deck reddit and keep it on SteamOS. There are only a few games that require windows.

Majority of the Games on Windows get the similar FPS and battery life, but the games just feel smoother on SteamOS. But the User Experience is WAY better in SteamOS.

As was stated before, if you NEED windows for a game, then Dual Boot. This is what I do and to my surprise, games I thought needed Windows really didn't thanks to Proton, Even PS Plus and PS Remote Play.

If your choices are this or a Steam Deck go Steam Deck. The Z1 non-extreme is slower than SD.
