Bought the same one through Costco the end of last year and the install was more than the generator.

I had 2 different electrical companies give me estimates on the Generac 20W package in Portland, OR. One was $16K & the other was $30K. Granted, it would be placed under my garage that is on stilts / hillside. If you can be your own contractor, then its much more affordable.
I can do solar w/ storage for $17K after the 30% federal tax rebates & save on my electrical bill forever.

When I had someone out to my house for an estimate, installation effectively doubles the cost. If you require a longer than normal natural gas line to be run, it will be more.

I ended up buying a 9kW portable inverter for $2k & had to spend around $4k to upgrade my panel & get an outdoor 50A receptacle installed.

It can power everything in the house except the AC. I bought a soft start kit for $400, which I will install this spring. That should allow it to start my AC as well.

Trade offs are that there's no instant automatic transfer & you have to manage fuel & oil changes.

That's basically what I did. Living in a small town adjacent to a major metropolitan city, extended power outtage is a very rare occasion but it does happen. Having had a small infant on the way I needed insurance. 15-20K is too much to pay for something that could be very well never be used. I got the 9kW portable generator from Costco so I could utilize the natural gas out in the back of the house, $400 soft start kit, $350 for transfer switch which also has built in 50A inlet. $400 for the electrician to connect transfer switch to panel. All said and done, about $2500.

Generator uses natural gas line so I don't have to worry about fuel. Using synthetic oil so I only need to change every 3 years or so.

Also in a major metro and even that seems like a lot of work for something that may never get used. I just have the generator and can use the natural gas hookup at my grills. Pair that with a few extension cords to all the fridges and I'm golden.

We have central heat and AC. Furnace fan needs 600W so that's easy, but can't exactly run extension cord up to the attic. For AC, we have a 5 ton unit condenser outside, hence the need for soft start kit to get it started. But yeah, if the household was all adults we can make do with space heaters and room AC units.

you can double the price of the generator for something basic. Assume another 6k for install. You need a permit, transfer switch, the wiring of course..whatever enclosures. Will need to upgrade gas meter most likely due to increased gas flow needed. If you need to run gas line very far or wiring then obviously it is going to be more

I see that somebody else already posted about doubling the price for install.

Why not just throw a 220 plug in the wall and back feed the panel at that point? That's what I do for rare power outages here… roll the generator out of the garage, start her up and switch the main/back feed breakers.

I really wanted to get a whole house gen, maybe one day… but it's just way too much money for the once or twice a year I need it for half a day. No nice place to put it near the house/panel either, so I'd need to trench out a good 70' to run the electric back. No NG here either, so I'd just put a couple LP tanks out there by it.

Same unit installed was 13.5K. Line run from the meter was a good length but other wise standard install with composite platform.

Bought one and installed most of it myself just had a electrician make the final switch over.

The wire can get expensive if it is far away.

Electric cost way more per foot of travel vrs gas line.

The generac lineset is color coded and easy to set up.

I got quotes from 15k to 25k… even with me doing all the trenching, PVC laying and routing, pouring pads… just needed licensed contractors to do transfer switch hookup and pull the wires, that was the 15k 😉

Have one and it's come in handy several times already. Does what it's supposed to. Clean power as well.

The WiFi on these are absolutely terrible so just keep that in mind. With a wifi extender literally beside it the signal strength was less than 50%. Once it loses connection it will not reconnect. Dealer had to manually update via USB and things didn't improve. Was able to integrate with Home Assistant while it was connected, but again, disconnects then never regains a connection.

If you live in a subdivision and the power goes out. I have a neighbor who has one. When it kicked on. It was surprisingly loud because we could hear it 4-5 doors away. Hopefully your power outage isn't too long so your neighbors want you to share.
