I ended up buying a 9kW portable inverter for $2k & had to spend around $4k to upgrade my panel & get an outdoor 50A receptacle installed.
It can power everything in the house except the AC. I bought a soft start kit for $400, which I will install this spring. That should allow it to start my AC as well.
Trade offs are that there's no instant automatic transfer & you have to manage fuel & oil changes.

Generator uses natural gas line so I don't have to worry about fuel. Using synthetic oil so I only need to change every 3 years or so.

I see that somebody else already posted about doubling the price for install.
I really wanted to get a whole house gen, maybe one day… but it's just way too much money for the once or twice a year I need it for half a day. No nice place to put it near the house/panel either, so I'd need to trench out a good 70' to run the electric back. No NG here either, so I'd just put a couple LP tanks out there by it.

The wire can get expensive if it is far away.
Electric cost way more per foot of travel vrs gas line.
The generac lineset is color coded and easy to set up.
The WiFi on these are absolutely terrible so just keep that in mind. With a wifi extender literally beside it the signal strength was less than 50%. Once it loses connection it will not reconnect. Dealer had to manually update via USB and things didn't improve. Was able to integrate with Home Assistant while it was connected, but again, disconnects then never regains a connection.
