They're pretty thin for an "insulated" panel, but they do look nice and are satin soft. They don't have a reflective surface toward the window, so the insulation must be sandwiched inside the panel (muslin?), or maybe they're just double layered without extra insulating materials. I would say the biggest insulating benefit comes from the air gap they create, because as you get close to them you can still feel the cold through them. I would actually buy double the number of panels (or at least double the width of the window you're covering) to maximize the insulating effect.
Not bad for $20-$30 per window, but if you want true blackout and/or true insulating panels and aren't renting or changing decor every year, buy a really nice set once because they work infinitely better and pay for themselves with the extra comfort from blocking drafts.

What would you recommend as a really nice set?
You're not likely to get a VERY good quality set from most department stores, but JC Penney and Nordstrom will have passable quality, but you'll want to look at them in-store and probably wait for their sales so you aren't over paying.
Best option would be a local upholstery shop: give them a call and tell them what you're wanting. It will cost more than these Deconovo by far, but they will be the last curtains you'll ever buy. I have a set that are 30 years old, and besides the sun faded backs, they still look as good as new (no holes, no tears, no fraying, no thinning, etc.).
