I stopped at the GameStop in Irving, TX (1:30pm) and they had 1 used copy available on the shelf. The employee said Nintendo reached out to the GameStops this morning and told them to change the price to $18.99 for the used copies. 😑 YMMV

That's called blowing smoke up people's asses. Nintendo would have absolutely nothing to do with it.

Exactly. Chances are they sold through quite a few copies between in store and online and the algorithm that they use decided that it needed to raise the price for the remaining stock. It's the same thing that happened with the former clearance games that were converted to preowned. Stuff like Scarlet Nexus was as low as $1.99 for days after conversion and then jumped up to $4.99 or so.
