However, I disagree that the trip insurance would be cheaper. It all depends on where you are going, how much you are spending, etc.
I try to fly for free anyway. So far this year:
Chase United business card -- 100K miles after spending $5K in 3 months. Requirements have been met, miles pending any day now.
AA business card -- 75K miles after $5 in 5 months. Requirements will be met by end of the month.
AA business card (for the wife) -- 75K miles after $5 in 5 months. Requirements will be met by end of the month.
Once I get the miles, I will be using the AA miles to fly first class between TPA and SFO. Stuck with a stop over... but two first class round trip flight. Should be less than 75K round trip per person (on their lowest mileage flights). Cost around $11 per person.
I grabbed the United miles because it hit 100K, no brainer. United sucks because they keep devaluing award miles. A few years back I could fly roundtrip coach between TPA and South East Asia for 40K, first class for 80K. It climbed a few times since then. Now if you find an 80K round trip for coach a lucky find, most are 100K. So, if they want to hand out 100K miles, I am grabbing them.
As for trip insurance. I get trip insurance too, but mostly for evacuation and international medical. I travel enough that I purchase a yearly plan from insure my trip. GeoBlue Global Trekker Choice. Covers me for as many trips as I want for a full 365 days (from the start of the first trip).
I have had to make trip insurance claims with credit card trip insurance and GeoBlue. Let me tell you, the trip insurance built into my credit cards are easier to navigate in case there is an issue. But credit card trip insurance doesn't cover all the kinds of insurance you might need. And I have needed both kinds in the past.
