A few things to know.
1. the plan only lasts 360 days, not a year.
2. renew price $30 does not include tax and fee. the tax and fee is about $1 or $2 for me.
3. If you forget to renew it when time is up, you have about 60 days to keep your number. There is an reactive fee of $1 if you forgot to renew the plan. This $1 is not a tax, not a yearly fee. It costs you $1 if you totally forget to renew the plan after 30 days.
You may want to link a credit card on RedPocket account so you get auto renew.
When I know I will have friends / family fly into US, I mail this SIM card out. I tell them to put this SIM card into their unlocked phone and call me when their flight lands at an airport. It saves $$ and make everything simple.

These don't require ANY service plan and they will last ~year before the battery needs changed.
These trackers tend to be very accurate as long as they remain in populated areas.
Tried to renew it online but it ask for $34 and change.. so I just let it expire. Probably going to pick this up again for another year.

- Wi-Fi calling counts against the 200 minutes per month.
- It is difficult to get a report of minutes used. Eventually, I was able to get a report, but the report did not reconcile with usage. For the last three months, my totals were not close to 200 minutes, yet I had run out of minutes each month.
- GSMT with RP does not support group texts or MMS. If you are part of a group text, you just won't get those texts.
- Porting your number out of RP is easy to do if you want to keep your number at a new carrier; however, if you do this, RP will close your line and you will forfeit any unused months left on your plan. CS is not helpful and will refer you to the terms and conditions, but nowhere in the T&Cs does it say porting out a number closes your account and forfeits your remaining balances.
For an emergency, backup phone, this is not bad. Service in my experience was not stellar, just OK. For a phone you expect to use somewhat frequently or for kid use, you may want to look elsewhere. My experience with RP was frustrating enough that I'm willing to cut my losses and move to a different carrier.
