Look into the knog scout. It's a tracker mounted under the water bottle cage that you can have audible alerts turned on via the app and track it in apple's find my. I got one for $25 and it's my go to because it's very accurate on the bike location and nearly impossible to remove without their proprietary screwdriver
It seems everyone is questioning what they can use this for so I'll give my two cents.
If you are worried about losing your item then you can use it as is and it'll help you find it.
If you are worried about your item being stolen then you will need to remove the speaker and hide it well within the item you are protecting. The item will still alert the thief that there is an air tag traveling with them but they won't be able to find it (since the speaker is removed and you hid it well) so they'll just dump the item somewhere and you can retrieve it.
If you are trying to keep tabs on kids, as long as there are iPhones near them it will ping but if the iphone setup with the air tag is not near by then everyone with iPhones will get an alert that they are getting tracked.
Another function is left behind so if you are worried about leaving an item behind somewhere (purse, backpack, etc) then you can set it up to alert you when you leave the item behind.

I was considering using one of these to track something that might be stolen. Are they still useful for that or does the way that they now notify you that there's one moving with you and Find My able to make them ring kind of make them useless for that?
I was considering getting this to track my bike however if my bike gets stolen it will notify the thief lmao. But otherwise a great price to track luggage or something.

I say it's useless now because mine always rings every single time I start driving away (it's inside the car hidden). But it's so loud that you know there is one there and it's easy to find. No longer can it go for hours or days before it let's you know a tracker is following you.
I have better luck with my Tile tracker. I never hear it and it updates decently often. Once in a very long while it will update more often than the air tag.

Very easy to disable the sound. Just remove the speaker magnet.

This thing is many thing, but absolutely not loud. I have quite few of this. The environment has to be quiet to hear it from a few feet away, I mean late night indoor kind of quiet.
In any chance, rumor has it there will be a new version of this is in the making. Surprised this is still priced $20 a pop.

I don't have an air tag. I wanted one for a similar reason, but didn't get it after something I read.
My understanding is the phone of the person the tag is moving with (in this case the person who stole your bike) will be notified they have a tracker moving with them (this after stalker-like people dropped tags into purses/pockets of unsuspecting people (usually women) so they could follow them when they left their location.
The article said apple devices notify users of their product if a tracker is moving with them. I'm not sure if Androids do the same.
I love mine, I have like 8. Tracked my suitcases at the airport last year for like two days, use it to track my utility trailer I have at another property as well as other stuff. I have one in a special holder that screws into the water bottle section on my bike too.
Can I use this AirTag to locate my kid's location if I put it into her backpack, even she doesn't have an iPhone? For example, when she's on the school bus, and other kids or the driver on the same bus may have iPhone, can I trace the actual location of the bus while it's moving? Does this feature require permission from other kid's iPhone? Thanks!

Yes. I use it for my youngest . With "find my iPhone " it's just under devices. Super easy , I bought a case for it and put with house key
