Great post, for those that are planning to upgrade the NVME drive and don't want to purchase a Suzy Q cable, you can also just unplug the battery while you have the cover off. With the battery unplugged, the Google CR50 chip will be disabled and you will be able to use mrchromebox firmware utility scripts to reflash the device.

The screen alone is worth like $100. Great deal.

I can't believe nobody's made a mod that allows you to install Linux on these things yet...

It's a locked-in encrypted bootloader, so unless they let you in or you can mod the BIOS physically or by overriding the chip with a programmer there's not a whole lot to do there unfortunately

Old chromebook just stopped getting updates. Anyone know how long this model is supported for and how to look it up?

I reflashed mine fairly easily last week, booting Debian 12 now. Do some reading on mrchromebox.tech. I used Suzy Q cable to unlock write protection in spi flash chip, but you can also do it fairly easily by just putting Chromebook into developer mode and then boot with battery unplugged from motherboard.

I also overwrote bootloader with full open source UEFI, so can dual boot windows and Linux, but if you just want to dual boot Linux and Chrome OS, the current firmware supports that after you disable write protect.

Ok, I couldn't help myself, I bought a 2nd one since I liked the one I bought for $200 last week so much. The reason I like this Chromebook so much is the keyboard and the screen, upgrading from an Acer Chromebook with a terrible keyboard.

For those interested, this is the NVME drive I used after wiping Chrome OS from the device.

I think you can find 2 TB drive in 2242 format, I just bought a 512 GB one for $40 since I didn't want to spend almost as much money as the Chromebook cost.

Only if they come with an unlocked/unlockable bootloader. Most don't unfortunately. I have had no luck installing Windows on a Lenovo 11E v3 for the same reason.

Same with Linux? It'd be a deal breaker for me as I'd love to see Linux on this machine (err...the linux that's not android....)

Linux apps will work with the built in enabler but not a full Linux GUI without the same bootloader unlock
