It seems the 3 month Xbox GamePass Core codes now only redeem for 1 month of GamePass Ultimate if you have an active Ultimate subscription (Used to be 3 months = 50 days). So the current rates for the 3 month Core passes make it not as good of a deal if you currently have GamePass Ultimate.
If you DON'T have GamePass Ultimate, it seems it would cheaper to go the route of redeeming 3 years worth of GamePass Core codes, then pay for one month of GamePass Ultimate, and the 3 years of Core will convert to 2 years of Ultimate.
This seems to be the current rates based off more recent posts on the subject around the web. I have not tested it myself, so info could be wrong. When CDKeys, Eneba, etc offer discounts on the codes, then it might be cheaper to convert the 3 months of Core into 1 month of GamePass Ultimate.

I'm not used to paying on international websites, so normally I don't specify country, probably didn't notice that it was wrong the first time I tried.

Or do I stack a load of XBox Core's (console) and then do a 1-month upgrade on the XBox PC app, and it 'converts' the console one to a PC one?

I do usually use them within a few months in most cases. I just check them when I get them but don't redeem them (you can run them through the redeem app in Xbox or Xbox.com to see if they are valid on arrival, just dont do last step of redemption). The only ones I have ever had an issue with were already redeemed when I got them, which I think is the case for most of them that have issues.
I started with an account with an expired subscription. (No current subscription to game pass ultimate)
I downloaded (on my phone) express vpn app and signed up for the one week free trial. I changed my location to India VPN.
I went to G2A website and purchased 3 x 12 month Xbox game pass core (India) codes, totaling $89
I logged into my Microsoft account on redeem.microsoft.com while on the India VPN and redeemed all codes for 3 years of game pass core. I now had a game pass core subscription with an expiration date of May 12 2027.
I then switched off VPN and refreshed my Microsoft account. It said my game pass ultimate subscription was expired and that I could get a 14 day trial for $1. I got the 14 day trial after which it said my current core subscription will be converted to ultimate with an expiration date of May 30 2026. Click ok. Boom I had game pass ultimate expiring May 30 2026. I then went and turned off recurring billing.
Don't forget to cancel the express vpn subscription also.

If you don't have the 1 week trial for $1 offer, then just buy a month of game pass ultimate directly from Xbox store or buy a 1 month code from G2A or Eneba or wherever you like and redeem it, which shall convert your core to ultimate with a 3:2 ratio automatically.
