I went through the website activation first (entered all the number porting info). Then I plugged in the SIM card into the phone and turned it on a few hours later. Phone would just display "SOS", which I guess is normal.

I received a VM (to my contact number listed on my TbV account) saying the number porting is in progress and it should be completed by tomorrow at 2PM ET. I then got the email from Google saying the GV number has been ported away.

I rebooted the phone a few minutes later and it registered with the network and asked me whether I wanted to set up Wi-Fi calling, etc. I sent a test text message, which worked. I then texted "UNLOCK" to 611611 twice and it replied with my unlock date ~59 days from now. I then turned off the phone and put it in a drawer.

The line shows activated and displays my ported # on the TbV site and all looks well.

EDIT: I don't know whether this is THE way to do it. Just sharing what made sense to me after reading through the whole thread and what ended up working for me.
Did you have to pay a fee to GV to enable porting out?

edit* received an email from GV to unlock phone number shortly after submitting activation info on total Verizon website.

as far as I can tell the wiki doesn't answer my question. Porting details in wiki was helpful but I wasn't sure if needed to 'unlock' number before porting out. Figured it out though.

You need to pay $3 to unlock, and set up a PIN before porting out.
Carrier will ask for PIN when porting in.

Yes, I left that part out, sorry. I paid $3 to unlock my GV number (which is instant after you pay, as others have said) a few minutes before filling out the activation form on the TbV website. It asks for the info about the number being ported including PIN #, etc.

As others also replied, definitely have the number unlocked before filling out the activation form. You don't have to have it unlocked until then (i.e. if you are still waiting to receive the phone+SIM, etc.)

I see TBV has cut the price on the Iphone 13 to $449, no verification and don't have to buy a plan. Still more than I was hoping, Target thread for $329 spoiled me i guess, even though I couldn't locate 1 within
300 miles of me, still a hopeful sign.
Quote from LazySurfer420 :
I am also waiting for the 13 to go below $350. Target deal did not work for me either, all stores within 50 miles were OOS.
I got on the Boost Mobile new iPhone 12 for $199 + $40 plan last year around March/April. Been waiting for iPhone 13 come down to $300-$350 this year cuz iPhone 12 only has 64GB where as 13 comes with 128GB.

Remember if you're just looking to activate the phone you can also "get a new number" and not worry about porting over, time frames and paying 3 dollars or whatnot.

Not good advice. Have you done this with yours?

Yes, I've done this with both of mine and they are both now activated, and show unlock date to be 7/15/24. Please tell me why you think this is not good advice. Others in the thread have also done it if you've read through all pages.

Because deal clearly requires port in not new number. Makes getting new number questionable.

When it comes to TbyV and TF you never know how they will handle it later - might be OK but from experience it's better to follow the rules rather than have to untangle a problem with support.

I completely understand being weary of doing things outside the box. But I've done it many times before with total/tracfone and it's unlocked each and every time. Once you get the text confirmation of unlock date, there's no going back. These companies don't have the manpower to start running reports after the fact to try and determine which were ported vs which were new numbers. They are only hoping we'll continue paying for service after the first month. That's all. Either way, if you have a number ready to port, then by all means do it. I was only suggesting for those that don't.

And you might have to text UNLOCK twice -- first time you might not get a response so text again a min later for date
