The iPhone 11 is very old at this point, I wouldn't recommend anything older than the iPhone 12.

I had an iPhone 11 up until 2023 and the main issue was that the chip would get crazy hot. Battery was also affected by that
This is a 4G phone
I was using an iPhone 11 like 6 months ago and it was behaving totally fine. Disagree that it's not usable right now, and the battery life will be right up there with the 12 whose battery life was natively poor.

As has been mentioned several times in this thread (& every other thread for Total & Tracfone) the sim is registered to IMEI of phone it's activated with so it's up to you if you want to take the chance on it working (or service suddenly not working).
Total/Tracfone are often YMMV & deviating from standard usage can sometimes have unfortunate results.
Taking risks:
I activated the iPhone 4 days ago and confirmed the unlock date by texting UNLOCK to 611611. I then moved the SIM card to another (unlocked) phone for 3 days.
The other phone works fine. In the other phone, yesterday the UNLOCK response was "you are using your own phone".
After restoring the SIM to the iPhone, the UNLOCK response was again "You are using your own phone".
I powered the iPhone down for the night and the next day the UNLOCK response was with the same date as before.

So, based on a single data point, it's fine to move the SIM.

after the phone activated. of course you can move the sim to any other unlock phones. Same for postpaid, prepaid or any carriers. Phone unlocked meant PERMANANT UNLOCKed

Both of mine were sealed in clear plastic, every new iPhone is.

That sounds like a bad sign. Yes, the SIM will work if moved to another phone. But it generally just gives the same original message when texting for the UNLOCK message, regardless of being moved to another phone. At least that's the way it has worked in the past. Most people will see something like "phone will automatically unlock on July XX". And that message / date will stay the same, even when texted from a completely different phone days later. However, the fact that yours says "using your own phone" appears to indicate that your line may have been registered as a BYOD phone and may not get the unlock automatically. If that has changed from the original "unlock on XX" message, that might have also affected the unlock. You may need to call in to get them to do it, as others have run into that issue in the past when getting that message. You never can tell for certain, but that's my interpretation based on watching a lot of these threads for years.

When you texted UNLOCK from the new phone when it was first activated (before any SIM swapping), did it give you an unlock date or did it say "using your own phone" or did you get no reply?

Agree, best suggestion when dealing with Tracfone or Total is not to play around with sims, things might seem OK for a while but you never know when they will pull service or refuse to unlock because you didn't follow the requirements. Their way of doing things isn't logical & support is very YMMV. I had to file FCC complaint to get a phone unlocked (I'm not the only one) because the refurbished iPhone I bought from them was never deactivated/reactivated correctly in their system. They do make mistakes & it can be frustrating to get it fixed.

As I wrote in the first sentence of my comment, " I activated the iPhone 4 days ago and confirmed the unlock date by texting UNLOCK to 611611"

A short summary is, moving the SIM out and back resulted in the UNLOCK response to be negative for some time, and the response later returned to the positive response.

Of course we won't know for sure until July 20, the unlock date given me.

True, you never know until the end, but the fact that it's now recognizing your phone as BYOD is not a good sign. BYOD phones don't generally get unlocked. If the message actually changed from giving a date to the BYOD message, it sounds like they may have recognized the IMEI change and updated your account so that the unlock trigger is not sent. Phones that are registered as BYOD don't usually get the auto unlock. For instance, here's a user in a previous thread who mentioned their phone didn't unlock and after a few replies, it becomes clear why … that phone was categorized as BYOD also.

At this point people are going to do whatever they want and act surprised and mad when things don't work out. You can't change their minds not to mess around with the proven data points.

Well said. They should just be grateful they're getting an iPhone at a great price with only a 60 day unlock.
Even if you don't use the plan it's still way cheaper than the TF refurbished model which costs 3 times as much and also requires buying a plan. This phone new at Tracfone is $239 so $50 is a steal - it's exactly the same phone.

the beauty of using old yet new iphones and being 4-5 years behind the technology curve is that:

1. they work well
2. you get a fresh battery
3. your "insurance policy" is that they are cheap

thus if the phone breaks or gets lost you're out ~$100 so no huge biggy. in a year or two you simply upgrade to a model 1-2 years newer for the same price. in a few more years it will probably be the iphone 13s that start showing up around this price.

the $100 phone used for 2 years is $4/month. i combine that with prepaid service that is ~$15/month for a grand total of $19/month per line. Not much more than some people pay for their phone insurance alone.
A voice of wisdom still rings out at Slick Deals.

A big THANKS and Reps for speaking to the Herd.

They don't, but someone posted earlier that his phone box wasn't sealed - it had to be if it was new.

Unopened clear plastic around the box is considered sealed by resellers/buyers.
