If one has a Rachio irrigation system already, can these be configured to work as additional zones to that controller? Or do these operation through the Rachio app but completely independent of Rachio irrigation zones?

I have the Rachio 12-zone. I'm assuming the same app is used, it will just show up as another device. No subscription required, I can control it from anywhere.

On this one - lots of comments / reviews about the power cable in the wifi dongle/hub not staying put. most people return these. Not sure if worth the trouble. I'm a DIYer so i can rig something up, but that is not the case for everyone...

Yes but not real time. Ranchio uses API polling and it updates every two minutes. They also have API limits. Also, because it utilizes polling. Your HA must be online.

Also check Rachio website because they have good deals discounts especially when you sign up I think they offered $15 off plus the percentage

If you are a Home Assistant user, the API is not open so you will not be able to integrate this into Home Assistant. I know the multi zone sensors do integrate but these do not.

How did you find that? I called my local warehouse and they said they don't have it. Can they check nearest availability as well?
