I've never had an issue with mold but they can get a slime on the bottom (In my experience with dogs who rush and/or don't completely lap up and swallow the water). I don't have the issue with my dogs but when my daughter brings her bigger dogs over it happens.
My dogs prefer the big metal bowls but I keep one of these out as well pretty much just for peace of mind that water is always available. For me the benefit of these is also the issue. My dogs go outside and sniff every inch of the yard then come back and deposit anything they've picked into the water bowls. Cleaning out the big regular bowls isn't too bad, but one of these with a bunch of water in them is a challenge to get into the kitchen and back without making a mess.

Even more mold with these (ceramic or stainless or plastic), the foam & charcoal filters only do so much. Need to clean & refill 2x week at least…
