Fast forward to 2024, and a $600 appliance continues the Americana tradition of expecting major appliances to last generations, or even outlast our own life!. However, they don't cost multiple paychecks anymore, but we love to hate them, and also love to brag when we have a dishwasher, dryer, or fridge that lasts decades.
Furthermore, appliances are one of those things we forget the most, when they work. Unlike cell phones, computers, etc, which cost so much more and we expect them to become obsolete, consumers are more lenient, when they actually shouldn't be.
How many flagship phones have you owned in the last 10 years? How much out of pocket on spent on them? Now, the same question for a washer/dryer? Exactly...
I've had Samsung appliances for 20 years, and never an issue. My GE fridge? Horrible. Does that mean GE is bad? No.
People don't 'hate every appliance company' they've just learned to avoid Samsung through the pain and suffering of dealing with crappy broken appliances that ruin your food or clothes, and then you have to get these huge things out of your home.

we're currently talking to samsung about this because the dryer in the house we moved into is one of these pieces of crap and the drum is breaking.....one shirt started on fire because the corner where drum is breaking caused the shirt to stay in place whilst the drum kept moving and friction burned it
yeah, no. betwixt this and their crappy azz refrigerators, eff no to Samsung

It was a better value for the money back then.
Sure, the appliances didn't go up at the same rate, like some other things, over the years. They still went up, though. They also just kept making them cheaper. Instead of having an appliance last 20 or 30 years, now, it's 5-7 years or LESS with problems along the way. I would rather spend 1200, instead of 600, and get old school value. However, you pay more, nowadays, and still get a crappy appliance that doesn't last. You are getting less for your money. You also have to consider that manufacturing processes are cheaper and more efficient now.
More money gets you more stupid features no one needs, instead of longevity or quality.
With phones, you are talking about a whole different ballgame. Performance is constantly going up, and you are gaining ability of what you can do, and how fast you can do it, over the years. Also, screens are way better than they used to be. How much better does OLED look than standard 480, now?
By the way, Samsung is the worst appliance brand. It's absolute trash.
I just need an oven to be an oven. I just need my fridge to keep things cool. I don't need a touchscreen on it.
