I'm going to buy the Nikon 70-180 f2.8 instead, much cheaper lighter and smaller and nearly as good.

These S-Line Z lenses, as great as they are, really need to come down in a price a good amount. They've been over $2000 for years now and other mirrorless systems have more competitive glass for less money. I love Nikon but its hard to recommend their mirrorless system unless you're really committed to spending a ton of money. Z7II and the 24-70 f2.8 is my daily and I don't think my wallet will ever recover.

The 70-200 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8 are the same price as the DSLR versions were ten years ago. So how is these current prices high. You have to remember the mounts for Nikon are way larger and thus your comparing apples to oranges.

Watch for Nikon refurb sales. I picked this lens up for $1800 (or $1850, can't remember) earlier this year. I've now bought three refurb lenses from Nikon, and all have been perfect. If you can live with the shorter warranty, I'd highly recommend going that route.

The 70-200 2.8 has always been 2K as long as I can remember . So why do you say they need to come down in price. They never went up.

Where do you watch for the return sales: here? Nikonusa.com? Or elsewhere? Any shortcuts times of year to watch out for? Thanks in advance

If you look at Sony and Cannon mirrorless glass, it's a few hundred dollars cheaper every once in a while. Again, I'm just nitpicking because I do think you get extremely good glass, but it's just not easily affordable for self funded pro enthusiasts. I'm fully prepared to keep my 24-70 2.8 for a decade, it's the only way to justify the price.

You can sign up for promo emails from Nikon, and they email you directly each time stuff goes on sale (both new and refurb).
