As a former Disney Imagineer who has been to all Disney Parks worldwide and has a literal ride vehicle in his living room - I'm lamenting the current state of trash that is the US-based parks - Tokyo is where it's at.

Not only are the parks better, cleaner, friendlier, and more advanced, they're also much cheaper as of now. You could EASILY fly to Tokyo and spend 4 days there for less than a trip to WDW, no problem. Popcorn is around $2.50 USD. Tickets around $65 each. Stay at the Sheraton on the monorail line for cheap (and you can use Marriott Bonvoy points to do that for free). I've been twice in the past year and there is no comparison. The only downside is buying an extra suitcase, because you will be buying more gachapon and TDL souvenirs than you ever thought possible.

Plus you get the added benefit of the freshest sushi on Earth for $20 for a meal and get to visit the best city for tourists right now (although crowded, admittedly). Lastly, you could duck to Osaka to Universal Japan as well, which is another wonderful park. Or stay in Tokyo and see Sanrio Puroland for a Sanrio indoor theme park, which is so bad it's wonderful.

I would, however, avoid Tokyo Disney in June when they open Fantasy Springs, and it's too hot. TokyoDisney Sea will be a madhouse unless you just don't care about the new huge expansion.

You'll spend more at DL here because you'll need to purchase Genie+ if you want to ride more than 4 rides in a day. That adds another $120+ for a family of four, and that's the business model they're nickel and diming you with on this 'deal'.

Really, consider going to Tokyo instead of the US parks. Disneyland is pure trash and WDW is a beer-gut farm. I've had a Disneyland annual pass since 1990 (except when I worked at WDI), and this year I gave it up. Universal is eating their lunch.

Sorry but Disneyland sucks now. Poor customer service, terrible food, and broke-down rides. But maybe you'll get to witness some brawls.

this news is out in the wild. googling gave me all this [google.com].

but if it makes you feel more comfortable with my information, you can read it from disney park blogs [go.com] (not my source, but a source).

If you're going to CA just for Disneyland, you'll probably save money overall if you book a trip to Japan instead. Everything in Japan is much cheaper, such as food, hotel, transport. Plus you get the benefit of traveling to one of the best tourist destinations vs shithole california
Japan is cheaper, yes, but it is masked by the super weak Yen right now.

my friend just went back to Japan yesterday, she mentioned that a lot of hotels are jacking up prices for foreigners/tourists.

to you and me the prices seem cheap. within Japan hotel prices have inflated 30-50% or more. don't forget the JR Rail Pass, still a good bargain but it went from ~JPY 26000 (one week) to almost double between 2019 and 2023.

when this current cycle of high interest rates ends in the US and the JPY comes back down, the reality of pricing in Japan will hit.

Any way to find out what the upgrade cost for park hopper and Genie+ will be for these tickets?

Even without currency differences japan is still a lot cheaper than CA. Food especially is significantly cheaper.
I've seen people say hotels are more expensive for tourists, but I just looked up some of the hotels I've stayed at and the pricing is pretty much the same. They're actually cheaper now if anything. The tiktoks I've seen claiming this are just shopping between brokers. Prices have always varied between brokers. The best pricing I've seen is usually going to agoda through google search. You have to link from google because the price is different than if you search on the site itself. Hotel prices are highly seasonal and there are many factors that go into hotel pricing, however its still extremely affordable.

I've never gotten JR pass and I don't think it was a good deal even when it was cheaper. JR pass only paid the base fare, meaning you'd still have to pay part of the costs of most shinkansen rides. The time limit meant you had to waste a lot of time traveling to make up the price of the JR pass. Theres so much to do in every city that you'd be rushing too much to enjoy anything. For example, you can easily spend a week in Kyoto and not even see everything entirely.

Heres a tip, don't stay too long in Tokyo. Tokyo is a bit more expensive than the rest of Japan.

  • hotel pricing - I'm mostly using cheapest salaryman-type small hotels as basis. in years before, the Tokyu Stays (equivalent) type of hotel was consistently sub-$70 even at under 110 exchange rate, now it is closer to $100 USD.
    • my hotel pricing comparison time window is fairly consistent, actually. I usually go either mid-Jan for Tokyo Auto Salon, mid-March on my way to other parts of Asia, or October.
  • last few times I've transited in Haneda I've stayed at the Royal Park Hotel. between 2015 to 2018 the prices were always closer to $100/night for the basic room, now it is up to $150-170 range
  • JR Rail Pass I've bought twice, for basic Shinkansen fares there is no surcharge, only when you want to take trains that have less stops. The point of comparison is this:
    • in 2017 I used JR Rail Pass to go from Tokyo <-> Osaka/Kyoto for Â¥25600 (this also included my Narita Express tickets as well as all the regular JR lines). I did not pay anything extra as I picked the train that did not have any surcharges.
    • the same 7-day pass now is Â¥50000
    • as a point of comparison, the basic Shinkansen fare between Tokyo and Kyoto is Â¥13000, so you'd need to take this 4x to cover the cost of the 7-day pass now.
    • JR Rail Pass is good if you are doing multiple trips, not really useful otherwise.
Food is cheaper overall but I try not to overspend on that. I try to bring my own outside food/water, or I would also physically leave the park to eat in Downtown Disney or outside that area.

Japanese food can also get real expensive real quick. "cheap" entirely depends on where you eat and what you eat, but since the thread is about Disney yes, it is cheaper inside the JP park vs CA.

2015-2018 is so long ago in a different economic climate, it really doesn't prove anything about recent pricing. From what I can see, the pricing has stayed consistent for the past 2 years. People are talking about recent 'tourist surcharge' and I don't see any evidence of that.

I'm saying JR pass was never worth it. The time limit made it so you'd have to rush through everywhere to make up the cost. Tokyo to osaka might be 25600, but with JR pass, you were likely making a lot more smaller cheaper trips. You really had to waste a lot of your time traveling to make up the price.

If you live in CA and like Disney, it probably makes sense to visit a few times since you can just drive and park. However if you're considering driving a long distance, or flying, don't bother. You'll have a much better experience and save money overall by going to Japan

on your point for hotel comparison, I also have stays in early 2023 and October and also March to back up my data, all are stays at the same hotels.

my last pre-COVID trip was Jan 2020 and was booked with points, so I don't have a direct comparison on that one.

as for the whole "live in CA and Like Disney" part, ... all true until one problem:

every ride is in Japanese in Japan.

I completely forget about this... Journey to the Center of the Earth, 20000 Leagues Under the Sea, even Indiana Jones was all Japanese dialogue.

its fun once in a while or just once, but after multiple visits the only way I'd go again is if it fit into my travel schedule that includes Japan.

Does Disneyland Japan have SW stuff? But yeah, hearing it all in Japanese for non-speakers may be a little missing out on the exp. It's like when we went to Kabuki theater in Tokyo and spend the $$ for the translating units vs this couple next to us that looked really lost and left within minutes not understanding a thing. My only regret was not buying the whole show tickets for 3hrs+ as you can buy a "sampler" show for first act about 1hr+

I have never been to Tokyo Disneyland but the rides only include Star Tours.

reviews of the park on Reddit all say the park is devoid of Star Wars/Marvel attractions.

even at DisneySea, Tower of Terror is still called Tower of Terror.

I doubt it, the multi-day deals are usually to get you to be in the parks for more days so you can spend money on their overpriced stuff.

Only downside is that you might miss out on a traditional social event taking place in SoCal Disneyland each summer where a pack of family moms fight it out in front of the children. You won't see that in Tokyo.

That would work for me but for the other two adults disney asks for ID and would force them to pay the difference.

I just went to Disneyland and California Adventure a few days ago, we got a park hopper but decided against Genie+, and still got to ride practically every single ride at the park. 3 days seems like over kill. I could understand 3 or more days at Disney World, but until the Disney Forward project is completed, you really only need one day in Disneyland, and one day in California Adventure, maximum. It's also a hot dog and hot dog buns problem. To get the full deal, you have to book a minimum of four nights at a Disney hotel, but the tickets are only for three days. So, you basically have to spend one day in your hotel room, and one day slumming around Downtown Disney, if you want to feel like you got your money's worth.

IDK about that. Unless you get there at opening and jump between rides as efficiently as possible, I don't think you can ride all the big stuff in 1 day. But also there's lots of stuff to walk around and check out, and food to eat.

And at least with proper disneyland I am positive you're missing cool/fun stuff to check out if you rush all the rides in one day. California adventure ehhh probably one day is enough lol.

It's honestly not that hard to ride everything in a day at Disneyland if you time it correctly. Maybe you're just bad at planning, but if you go early in the morning, you can knockout all of the rides in Fantasyland in less than an hour. And, if you go during parades, and fireworks, and at the times that people are eating meals, you can practically walk on rides. I got on Radiator Springs Racers, a ride that usually has hours of wait time, in under 20 minutes, and I walked right on the Spider-Man ride at lunch time. Longest wait of the day was Roger Rabbit Cartoon Spin, and that was 36 minutes, because there were a ton of Genie+ users in line at the time with their lightning lanes. We even got on Rise of the Resistance in under 30 minutes, and walked right on the Millennium Falcon ride.
