Not sure why you would buy a frost free chest freezer, they are louder, more expensive to run, and don't keep the temp as consistent.

Sounds like you guys were misusing it all around because a chest freezer shouldn't be a constant use thing and yeah you shouldn't be leaving any fridge/freezer open for minutes at a time multiple times a day.

The only time a defroster makes sense on a freezer is an upright but that's because uprights are such an awful form factor you have to go with a frost free model. Uprights are awful because every time you open them the air flushes out so the whole thing has to cool down as opposed to a chest freezer where the air sits when you open it.

It's not as much of a concern on a chest freezer, it's typically only around the opening that ice builds and even then it isn't much. Will you eventually have to defrost it? Yes. After 5yrs with my Midea chest freezer am I even close to needing to do it? No.

After getting a frost-free ones, not sure if I'd still buy traditional chest freezers. However, this is a good price.

Its a freezer where it doesn't build ice on its walls.

So you don't have to defrost it, maybe?

I suspect it is affected by environment and use-case - grew up in super-humid FL, parents never ran the A/C in the house so it was always a sauna, and they had a chest freezer that got opened frequently - I couldn't tell you exactly how often it needed defrosting, it wasn't something I paid really close attention to, but seems like at least a couple times a year needed to be defrosted. In a dryer environment and with infrequent opening, yeah, probably much less needed. Maybe that's why we kids always got yelled at to close the dang freezer when we stood there for 5 minutes with it open trying to figure out what we wanted out of it Wink

Not sure what production line you are using right now in the US, but in Asian, the main products are all frost free without the cons you listed. The ones that are building ices on the wall are slowly rolling out of the market.

Since all ours are made in Asia, are you saying Asian manufacturers are selling the good ones domestically, and only sending us the lemons? Big Grin

Bought this exact model for the same price last week after reading multiple reviews that all of the stock is scratch and dent and sure enough mine was as well. Have a big dent on the top but towards the back which will be mostly out of view in my garage. I am not complaining as the price puts at used options from FB marketplace and the unit works perfectly.

Good price for the size, but... TCL? How long have they been making freezers? How reliable are we expecting it to be, especially considering how "cheap" this is comparatively.

I'm seeing a lot of comments where it arrived damaged. And some got a full refund without having to return it and others would only get a refund if they returned it. That's the one issue where I'd have if they want me to return it. I don't have any way of transporting it.

Bought one of these at this price a month or so ago when it was last available.

I will agree with everyone: you should expect at least one or more scratches/dents on the freezer. Mine came with two (minor) dents, and Walmart said the only option to rectify that is to package it up and return it to a Walmart store at your own expense.

That being said, other than the scratch/dent, it's a great freezer for the price. Has lots of room, a handy drawer thing, and it's super chilly. It works way better than the fridge/freezer that came with the house I'm renting.

Got this one in a previous deal. Pretty solid freezer so far but expect it to arrive dented or scratched. I know 3 people who ordered one and all of them arrived beat up in some way.
