A 2 pack of plain Bics is $2.97 ($1.485 each and stated to have "up to 3,000 lights" each ($.495 per 1000 lights). These are $3.43 (after cash back) for 2 ($1.715 each) and stated to have up to 3500 lights each ($.49 per 1000 lights). For fairness of comparison, these are all Walmart pricing and I used plain Bic lighters for pricing (designs cost a bit more).
Obviously real world number of lights will vary, but assuming the same method of testing, these are actually cheaper per light. Plus while aesthetics are subjective, but I think most people would agree that the textured wood finish and bronze tip on these also looks and feels more premium than a Bic lighter. Personally I also like the shape of these. They're a bit wider and shorter than Bic lighters which means they're the perfect size for the 5th pocket in a pair of jeans, while Bic lighters stick out a bit.

Bics are not a dollar a pop. You may find a Mini at dollar tree if you're lucky and that's $1.25 a pop.

I approve this peer-reviewed, meta-analyzed post.
Yeah, BIC bought the company in 2020, so they are technically Bic company lighters, though they're still made in the DJEEP factory in France. Manufacturing process hasnt changed, so I would say in the most important ways they aren't Bic lighters despite being a subsidiary.
Regardless, I can't find any evidence of them being "junk". I have a few smoker friends who have used them for years, and I (a nonsmoker who admittedly only uses it a few times a week) have had one for over a year now. We've all been happy with ours and had no issues with them. I've also found nothing but positive feedback in a few smoking subreddits like r/trees.
Also worth nothing a couple of positives for me over a Bic lighter. I like that these are a bit wider and shorter. It makes them more ergonomic to hold and they can't bee seen like a Bic when you put it in your jeans 5th pocket. They also look and feel much nicer than a Bic (at least these "wood" varieties). I don't think it's real wood, but it is textured and feels almost real.
