Used to work at sunglass hut many years ago, Maui Jims were by far the best brand back then, their lenses were second to none. I hope that's still the case today.

I like glass lenses for clarity but after seeing that video about the girl who lost her eye after an airbag shattered her sunglasses, it's all polycarbonate for me!
Good to know. Next pair for me will be Polycarbonate as well. I have a very old set of Maui Jims that are on their last leg.

Maui Jim has a series called Asian-fit for wider faces. I also have a pair of Banyans (very old model I bought back in 2010). Just a data point for you, the legs of Raybans classic Aviator stick right into the outer corners of my eyes.

They were recently bought out by Luxottica, sad for one of the few independent brands. Hopefully quality is still ok.

Wow so ive had my Maui Jim for 7 years now. I paid $300 for them and they are still in good condition. Noticed one of the nose pad is missing and googled their repair service. Turns out i can order free nose pads no receipt necessary and they even pay for shipping. It was 100% free hassle free....

Will order new pair just because of this service.

Glass lenses have better optical clarity and scratch resistance. Downsides are they shatter if hit... Because glass
Use some common sense... I would wager to say that getting an eye injury do to glass breakage is a very small edge case.

I would also wager that there are also people that would say wearing any glasses can cause additional damage.

From: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/...%20injury.
"Of occupants who sustained an air bag–induced eye injury, 29% were wearing glasses, whereas 25% of occupants who did not receive an air bag–induced eye injury were wearing glasses. However, this variable was not found to be statistically significant in predicting risk of air bag–induced eye injury (P = .81)."

Not sure if the study occurred before the age of the "depowered" airbags.

If you're really worried about eye injury, I would read your owners manual and don't tilt your steering wheel at your face and don't sit too close to your steering wheel.

I only wear MJ because of my Big Wide Head. When you order from their site, they can filter it down to those for larger faces. All of these seem to be aimed at "normal" headed people. But I took a chance on a pair to see. It can always go back...

I've only previously purchased and lost Oakley's. Maybe it's time to lose a different brand this year...
FWIW, Oakleys, like 95% of sunglasses you can buy, are made by Luxottica Group: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxottica

In my experience, MJs are very much worth the expense. Though they don't seem to be any less likely to get lost.

Looks like it was Kering, not Luxottica.

Got the Maui Jim Pokowai Arch Polarized Sunglasses (original post) today.
Feeling disappointed!!!

They did not come with the original box. Came wrapped up in plastic with the glasses inside the Maui Jim Case. The case also does not look genuine compared to my previous Maui Jim purchase.
The glasses seem okay but now I highly doubt if I have received an genuine pair of glasses!!!
