Why can't they just knock $100 off of preorders instead of store credit?
If you purchase from Amazon or Best Buy you get a $100 gift card for their respective stores which are far more useful, but then you won't be able to trade-in if you have a device you want to get rid of.
EDIT: I was wrong. Best Buy is offering trade-ins.

Thanks, I noticed that, but I have a cracked 6a that still powers on that I'd like to get rid of. Oh well.

Apologies I was incorrect. Just checked Best Buy. They're accepting trade-ins, including phones with cracked screens. $120-140 for your 6a depending on how they grade it.

I wouldn't do the trade-in right now. Google is trying to "fish" for sales before their Google I/O event in a week. Make Google panic. Don't reserve the phone. The price of this phone is only $50 less than the Google 8 which has way more capabilities. In past years Google has given people a free pair of headphones with a pre-order, on top of the $100 back. When they see their pre-order sales are down they will have to get more generous. As of right now the 8a isn't a great bargain.

Because it's financially beneficial for companies to do it this way vs just giving $100 off. They've calculated the pros/cons vs just giving $100 off. Some of these benefits include:
The vast majority of people will spend more than $100 when they use the credit/Gift card
Many credits/gift cards end up never being used
Gets people to come into the store (e.g. Best Buy) and buy other things they didn't originally plan to buy
Helps clear inventory of other items when the credit is used
The $100 can be used by the company right away vs just taking $100 off the price. Basically like a free loan.
Are Pixel devices good or bad?
Seems SD threads are always divided on their opinion of Pixel phones.
For the money, they are pretty good. I love mine. I think they have a few weaknesses, such as quality control, antenna performance, fingerprint reader, etc. The cameras are top tier. The functionality is great and there is no bloatware. I also love the immediate updates when new versions on android roll out, along with monthly updates. I will replace my current one with another pixel if this all helps. Depreciation is an issue, but this offers good opportunities on used units. I bought a 6A one year ago for $212 bucks. It was near mint condition and has been perfect. I can trade it in for $180 after using for one year. Maybe I should just get a used or new 7A instead of 8A. LOL

You can always cancel the order or return the phone when a better deal comes. with Bestbuy or Google Store you have 14 days for return.
