You don't know what you're talking about. It takes less than 2 hours without traffic and most people who live in Southern California know when traffic is bad.
As a fan of the original Jurassic Park, I disagree, Kaua'i is the best.

As a tourist, Maui is the best, it feels like it is its own little country without a big city. Wailea is different Hana is different from Kihei and Lahaina.
*6 hours there and back

Newport to SD is pretty much 2 hours with any normal amount of traffic

wouldn't even bother with OC to LA for $100 savings, time worth more than that

Kauai and big island are a toss up for us. I thought Maui sucked. Road to Hana was really dumb. There were some nice snorkeling spots. I like the remoteness of the big island. Spaced out, great snorkeling. We're not ones to sit on a beach all day so the few really nice beaches in Kona are fine.

Hmm, Kauai is special though too. Insanely scenic and nice beaches. If you haven't visited the turtle sanctuary place I'd recommend it. I think it's on Kauai. It's really random but a nice gem.

Ha!Ha! You have been to Maui once. You don't know Maui.

Has anyone been able to duplicate this deal? I'm entering dates within the parameters of the travel availability and just not getting the $187 to come up.

San Diego is an expensive airport, so this is a good deal. I live in SD but most of the time when I fly I go to LAX so save a hundred or more.
I haven't found this to be true. I've certainly seen deals out of LAX to Hawaii, but I've flown out of San Diego at least 10 times to Maui and the Big Island for under $250 round trip. Hawaiian Airlines often runs promos out of San Diego, just have to be ready to pull the trigger when they do.

Big island is by far the best of all the islands. Prove me wrong.
Before the Lahaina fire, I would have argued that its Maui by far. The combination of beaches, nightlife, shopping and activities is best on Maui, especially if you go during whale season. However, the west side of Maui just isn't the same anymore with the destruction of Lahaina.

6 hour extra commute plus $50+ in gas plus parking is somehow worth saving $100?
Hell no I wouldn't save $100 to drive to LAX from San Diego. What a waste of time.

yeah, I stayed in Kaanapali before and Lahaina that was the biggest draw of Maui for me. I actually had a vacation in Kaanapali booked a few weeks after the fire and had to cancel. Now I am not sure it's even worth it to vacation in that region of Maui, because Lahaina is where everyone went to do all the touristy stuff and eat and shop. Now if you go to stay at Kaanapali, you're pretty much stuck there for that sort of stuff and there's not much there. Just the beach and resorts. Is it worth visiting the other areas of Maui?

Some people like staying in Kihei in Maui. There is more beach there, but also a lot more locals and not many ocean front lodging options. I agree with you, Lahaina was the main draw to the Kaanapali side. I planned on moving there at some point and with the destruction of Lahaina, all that has changed and I haven't been back as it appears really depressing. I do like Kona on the Big Island and its probably the most affordable to stay at compared to the other tourist cities on the other islands.

We couldn't care less about nightlife or shopping so maybe that's why Maui didn't do it for us. The only thing I remember from Lahaina was a cool looking tree and a peter lik gallery, lol. We stayed in kehei. Sunrise up on Haleakala was pretty special though. Not nearly as cool as seeing the Milky Way with your eyes on top of mauna kea, but still neat.

I should clarify my original statement. In general, the SD airport is overpriced in relation to other airports. It only has 1 runway. There are limited direct flights out of the airport, depending on where you are going. Flying to large airports is cheap, like Vegas, SF, Denver, Phoenix, etc. If you want to fly to a smaller airport for cheaper, it's sometimes better to rent a car 1 way and take your family to LAX.

Fresno has 2 runways with a smaller population... 😠

Stayed at the Kilauea Military Camp in September with my wife, we had a great time and it's an easy walk to the crater rim to see the volcano that was actively spewing lava, was pretty awesome. I know you gotta be military/gov't employee, but well worth a couple days there, and it's kinda in between Kona/Hilo and the Black Sands beach. Just remember to bring a good fleece pullover, at 14k elevation, we weren't necessarily prepared for the 60deg temps with a stiff wind. Bring binos, though my Samsung 23 Ultra with the 10x optical did surprisingly well with pics and video.

This argument is kind of a waste of time. People who live in North San Diego versus people who live in South San Diego is a full hour difference let alone any drive north from the county line

Its 1.5-2.5 hours max. I lived in both SD and LA and I always take my flights out of LA due to the costs. Flying to Korea right now per person is 300 less in los angeles per person. Factor in other family members and it can count for thousands. Don't post if you don't know what you're talking about.

Trying to be snarky but too stupid to double the time because you have to drive back home as well huh?

I can get to the border in 15 minutes from downtown. It all depends on the time of day. You don't plan your drive to SAN airport? The same logic would apply if driving to any airport. You could get to LAX in 2 hours and 10 minutes from the border. If flying alone the price difference might not matter but flying with a wife or more can significantly lower the price.

LOL 1.5hours so you're going 90mph straight from SD to LA with zero slowdowns what kind of flying car do you have?

It depends on what time you leave. I drive 90 all the time. If I Google map downtown SD to LAX it's 2 hours. I don't know if Google is using the legal speed limits or has learned my driving habits but I have made it in less than 2 hours using the 405, not the toll road. LAX is open 24 hours unlike the laughable san diego airport.
